The City of Battle Creek is looking for an electrical apprentice to assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical devices and equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the moderate supervision of the Process Controls Supervisor/Foreman II.

Serves as an apprentice/electrical trainee under the mentorship of a Master/Journeyman Electrician to provide daily support to licensed Electricians. Electrical Apprentices will train in the following categories:
Troubleshooting of all electrical systems, Motor Controls, Wire Way Installation/Rough‑In, SCADA/Signaling/PLCs, Variable Frequency Drives, Instrumentation, Low Voltage, Schematics/Blueprints, and Emergency Stand‑By Systems. An Electrical Apprentice will support licensed Electricians in the following duties:

• Install, maintain, and repair a wide variety of electrical equipment and devices.
• Install, maintain, and repair motors; controls; electrical wiring; and components up to 8.3kV, single and three phase.
• Troubleshoot electrical problems.
• Perform simple and complex electrical and electronic tests.
• Select electrical components and design simple electrical circuits.
• Maintain records and prepare written reports and recommendations on electrical equipment and controls.
• Perform troubleshooting tasks on electronic controls and components.
• Install and maintain electronic devices.
• Perform complex troubleshooting tasks on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and combined motor control and alarm systems.
• Troubleshoot, maintain, install, and repair variable speed motor controllers and Programmable Logic Controllers.
• Lay out, cut, bend, thread, assemble and install conduit.
• Soldering and electronic assembly of electronic components.

Upon completion of the apprenticeship program, an Electrical Apprentice should be able to perform the essential functions of a Journeyman Electrician.

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.

• Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan with a valid DOT Medical Card upon hire.
• Complete 8000 hours of training under the City of Battle Creek’s Apprenticeship program over five years.
• Complete 576 hours of formal education under the City of Battle Creek’s Apprenticeship program over five years.
• Hold an active Apprenticeship Card through the State of Michigan.
