Overview

Drop Bury Technicians are responsible for locating underground utilities, including telecommunications, electric power, cable TV, gas, water, and sewer systems at residential or commercial job sites. After locating, technicians use utility markings to prevent damage while burying coax and fiber optic cable lines. The work includes searching designated areas, accurately marking utility locations, trenching cable lines (typically 6-8 inches deep), completing driveway and sidewalk bores, maintaining accurate records and documentation, and photographing each locate and drop bury to ensure customer compliance.

Strong interpersonal communication skills are important as technicians interact with customers, team members, and supervisors to ensure safety and quality work.

Responsibilities
  • Drive company vehicle to assigned outdoor job sites and perform locates and drop bury tickets as assigned
  • Understand and reference records, maps, and prints to accurately locate and mark underground facilities
  • Utilize locating equipment and follow procedures to ensure accurate, high-quality locates
  • Operate digging equipment and/or use hand tools to trench or bore cable lines (typically 6-8 inches deep)
  • Use smartphone and company software to indicate time worked and identify facilities located and tickets completed for billing
  • Adhere to all safety procedures and regulations, including OSHA and company guidelines
  • Take and process photos and complete documentation as needed
  • Check equipment and supplies daily to ensure you have what you need and that it is fully operational
  • Interact with utility representatives, contractors, property owners, and teammates to coordinate work and maintain positive relations
  • Demonstrate professional and respectful behavior

Qualifications
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Computer proficiency and ability to use locating equipment
  • Available to work overtime, including weekends, as needed
  • Ability to pass a drug screen (safety-sensitive position)
  • Valid driver’s license and a safe driving record
  • Ability to walk long distances, bend, kneel, and lift up to 75 lbs; ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to do manual labor using hand tools to dig/bore 6-8 inches in depth for up to 100 feet
  • Ability to distinguish colors used to identify wiring and mark underground utilities
  • Ability to read and reference locate tickets, maps, and prints
  • Ability to communicate clearly with colleagues, customers, contractors, and property owners
  • Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Previous utility industry/locating/drop bury experience is beneficial but not required
  • Experience with operating digging equipment or fiber-related tools is preferred but not required
