Job Summary:

Performs intermediate semiskilled work performing automotive maintenance and repair; related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of an Operations Supervisor. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to DOT FTA Drug and Alcohol testing requirements.

Depending on your qualifications and experience, you may qualify for the following Mechanic classification:

Mechanic Class C – Starting Wage: $25.26 per hour

Mechanic Class B – Starting Wage: $28.65 per hour

Mechanic Class A – Starting Wage: $30.64 per hour

Qualification Requirements:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable an individual with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Essential Functions:

  • Adjusts and repairs automotive equipment using hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment. Disassembles defective equipment, such as air compressors, hydraulic pumps, and transfer pumps. Reassembles, adjusts and tests repaired equipment. May replace defective parts, using pipe fittings and/or welding tools. May install new equipment as necessary.
  • Overhauls automotive engines or rebuilds parts as necessary. Adjusts brakes, replaces or repairs tires, and makes automotive repairs to electrical systems to heavy duty buses and other City vehicles. Performs preventative maintenance and tune-ups on all vehicles.
  • Prepare records and documentation of work performed on vehicles.
  • Complies with all TACC safety policies/procedures for reporting safety events, and mechanical concerns.

Physical Requirements:

Strength & Lifting

  • Ability to lift/carry 50-75 lbs regularly (parts, tools, batteries, tires).
  • Occasional lifting of heavier items (100+ lbs) with assistance or mechanical aid (engine components, transmissions).
  • Pushing/pulling force for moving equipment, jacks, and parts carts.

Mobility & Dexterity

  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling (working under vehicles, in wheel wells, engine compartments)
  • Climbing on/into vehicles (buses, vans) and using ladders or platforms for roof-mounted equipment (A/C units, etc.)
  • Reaching overhead and in confined, awkward positions for extended periods
  • Fine motor dexterity for handling small parts, fasteners, hand tools, and diagnostic equipment
  • Standing/walking for most of the shift (often 8+ hours) on hard surfaces (concrete shop floors)

Strength/Stamina

  • Physical stamina for sustained physical labor throughout a full shift
  • Grip strength for hand tools, wrenches, and power equipment

Sensory

  • Vision adequate for close, detailed work (reading gauges, diagnosing wear, inspecting parts) and color vision for wiring/fluid identification
  • Hearing sufficient to diagnose issues (unusual engine/mechanical sounds) and for safety communication in a noisy shop environment

Working Conditions:

Environment

  • Indoor shop/garage setting, though may include outdoor work (roadside breakdowns/service calls)
  • Exposure to noise (pneumatic tools, engines, compressors)
  • Exposure to grease, oil, solvents, exhaust fumes, and other automotive chemicals
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures depending on season and whether working in bays with open doors or outdoors

Schedule

  • Shift work, including evenings, nights, and holidays
  • On-call or emergency road-call duty may be required for breakdowns during service hours
  • Overtime is common, particularly for fleet readiness before service periods
