Job Description

Instructional Para educator

Purpose: Assist in supervising, caring, and instructing students with special needs in regular education classrooms, resource rooms, or other special settings; assist in implementing instructional plans; monitor behavior; and provide information to school personnel, all under the direct supervision of the Special Education Teacher.

Responsible to: Special Education Teacher, District Administration, and SEK 637 Administration.

Experience: Job‑related experience is desired.

Education/

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent. Applicants must have 48 college hours or a qualifying score on the Master Teacher Online Exam within the first 90 days of employment, and 20 hours of in‑service training per year are required. All para‑educator positions are considered non‑exempt, at‑will positions.

  • Criminal background check
  • Health and inoculation certificate on file in Central Office

FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt

Wages: Based on hourly rate, number of days worked, and completion of required trainings (9‑month school calendar).

Essential Functions
  • Adapt and provide accommodations for classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the teacher to enable special‑education students to participate in general‑education and/or resource‑room activities.
  • Aid students in and out of the classroom (e.g., packing backpacks, note taking, relationship building, field trips, social skills) to support their needs and social growth.
  • Assist students requiring supports in addressing personal‑care needs due to medical condition or physical limitations (e.g., diaper changing, potty training, lavatory, hand washing, nutrition) to allow students to participate in the general‑education environment.
  • Participate in trainings (e.g., educational strategies, specific disability education) to acquire and convey information relative to job functions and meet state requirements.
  • Collaborate with staff to provide necessary support and information related to a student’s progress as established in the Individual Education Plan under the direction of certified staff.
  • Create visual aids based on the level of a student’s visual impairment to improve learning.
  • Implement educational and behavioral programming under the supervision of classroom certified staff to develop new skills.
  • Assist students with challenging and/or aggressive behaviors in accordance with general‑education policies, procedures, and IEP.
  • Instruct students in a variety of activities in individual and group settings within the general‑education building to meet IEP goals under the direction of certified staff.
  • Maintain instructional materials and data sheets to ensure availability and provide reliable information on student progress.
  • Monitor students during assigned periods in school and community environments (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, fire drills, assemblies, cafeteria, parking lots) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Assist in establishing a positive learning environment and respond to individual student needs.
  • Work cooperatively and demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with other paras, professionals, community agencies, and other groups.
  • Safeguard confidential information and observe confidentiality requirements.
  • Use appropriate behavior‑management techniques to maintain a positive climate for learning.
  • Faithful, daily attendance and adherence to work schedules.
  • Observe all district and inter‑local policies during activities.
  • Restrict cell‑phone usage to break and lunch times.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the educational team.
