Work ArrangementThis role is primarily remote for candidates located in Michigan. Occasional onsite reporting may be required at Consumers Energy service centers or permit agency locations. Preferred onsite locations will be discussed during supplier calls. Limited travel within lower Michigan may be required to support business needs and attend company meetings.
Position SummaryThe Technical Specialist I will support the Gas Engineering Asset Planning organization within the Permit Coordination team. This role provides technical and administrative support related to gas permitting activities, ensuring compliance, accurate tracking, and coordination of permits, bonds, and inspection escrows. The position plays a key role in supporting the objectives of Geospatial & Gas Asset Management (G&GAM) across lower Michigan.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of building or utility design, construction practices, and general engineering concepts, along with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities- Review preplanned work to determine required permits
- Apply for permits and manage detailed permit tracking
- Monitor and manage SAP tasks related to permit activities
- Issue start and completion notices to city, state, and township agencies
- Notify municipalities of construction schedules
- Complete check requests, bond requests, and invoicing
- Calculate permit fees for jobs with post-issuance charges
- Track inspection escrows and ensure timely refunds
- Track bonds and ensure recovery of outstanding bond funds
- Inspection escrow tracking
- Bond tracking
- Organize, create, modify, and utilize databases to support reporting and annual spend analysis
- Communicate with Restoration teams regarding cleanup schedules
- Coordinate with Scheduling teams on construction timelines
- Support the entire gas permit department throughout lower Michigan
- Deliver and retrieve permit packets from permit agency buildings
- Travel as needed to support service centers and permit-related activities
- Ability to work independently; self-starter with strong initiative
- Strong organizational and administrative skills
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to manage shifting priorities
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical, diagnostic, and facilitation abilities
- Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated professionalism, ethical standards, and collaborative mindset
- High School Diploma (required)
- Associate’s Degree or higher (preferred)
- Valid driver’s license with ability to travel locally
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access)
- Experience using SAP
- Proficiency with MS SharePoint and MS Visio
- Experience using Adobe Acrobat
- Experience using Micro Station
- Construction print reading and interpretation
- Knowledge of utility or building design and construction practices
