GIS Technician - Seasonal

These positions will not be hired directly by the City of Bay City, however referred to a Temporary Agency to complete the application/hire process.

All positions are Summer/temporary, Not-Union, with no benefits.

GIS Technician - Temporary

Observe and participate in activities associated with Bay City Electric Light & Power (BCELP) operations, records keeping, and engineering. The focus will primarily be on GIS, GPS, data collection and asset management. Experience a workplace setting and gain an understanding and appreciation of a career in an electric utility.

An eligible applicant may be called upon to participate in any or all of the following activities: (These examples do not include all of the tasks an applicant may participate in.)

• Learn about BCELP functions and activities - how utility systems work, utility crew operations and civil engineering. Learn to review and comprehend records drawings, scaling, profile, and details. Observe & record construction activities and engineering duties.
• GIS - Assist with the development, management, and maintenance of the Utilities GIS. This potentially consists of aligning points with GPS data, entering attributes, and learning how different software packages and systems function and work together.
• Prepare maps to be used by field crews or customers.
• GPS - Utilize survey grade GPS equipment to acquire coordinates on utility structures, such as meter sockets, poles, cabinets, conductors, etc.
• Attend relevant BCELP staff meetings.

• Work requires regular physical presence at the job site to perform job duties. Must be available to work flexible hours on a regular basis.

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Enrolled in a GIS or related program at an accredited higher education institution OR a recent graduate from a GIS or related program
• Minimum GPA of 2.5 (3.0 preferred)
• Must have a valid standard driver's license
• Must understand verbal and written materials and instructions; communicate effectively with the public, outside agencies, and city staff in a variety of situations.
• Exhibit a level of proficiency using computers and general understanding of various software applications, such as Microsoft Suite products, and ESRI ArcGIS.
• Familiarity with basic GPS functions and equipment.
• Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position.
• Must have an awareness of safety, understand the importance of safety, and be able to apply safety practices to the execution of all work.
