JOB SUMMARYUnder the supervision of the Building Official, the Deputy Building Official assists in the administration and enforcement of State of Michigan codes, City Ordinances and other related regulations through inspections, review and enforcement activities. Performs a variety of routine and complex technical, professional and administrative work in plan review, inspection and enforcement to determine compliance with all applicable building codes, ordinances as well as accepted standards relating to buildings within the city limits of the City of Bay City.
Work requires considerable independent judgement and initiative based on a comprehensive knowledge of Michigan Building Code, ordinances and other building regulations under the general direction of the Building Official.

Knowledge of- Knowledge and ability to locate, describe, and write actions to be taken to correct construction defects and code violations.
- Read, interpret, and apply plans and specifications, construction standards, and codes and laws.
- Communicate effectively under difficult situations with construction professionals, colleagues, the public, and other City Officials.
- Enforce laws and codes with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
- Prepare and maintain clear and concise records and reports.
- Must possess excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to work with numerous interruptions and work effectively under time constraints to meet deadlines.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions, as well as establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Deal successfully with the public, in person and over the telephone; respond tactfully, clearly, concisely, and courteously to issues, concerns, and needs.
