Public Safety Officer

The City of Bay City’s Department of Public Safety is seeking qualified individuals for the Public Safety Officer position. Candidates will patrol on a 12‑hour schedule, with alternate weekends providing three consecutive days off.

Salary ranges from $27.65 to $36.75 per hour. Starting pay is $27.65 per hour ($57,512 per year). Employees reach the top rate of $36.75 per hour after three years of service. For candidates with 3–5 years of sworn law‑enforcement experience, the 18‑month rate is $31.51 per hour. Those with more than five years begin at the 36‑month rate of $36.75 per hour.

Benefits include health insurance with a Health Savings Account, a defined‑benefit pension plan, and vacation time ranging from 80 to 240 hours (6 weeks) per year.

Special assignments and promotion opportunities are available, such as K‑9, FBI Task Force Officer on the VIPER unit, Accident Investigation, Community Policing, School Resource Officer, Evidence Technician, Drone Pilot, Firearms Instructor, and additional specialty and outreach positions.

Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Minimum age 21 years.
  • United States citizenship.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; college education and/or prior military experience preferred.
  • No felony convictions or a history of criminal or improper conduct.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license; no lifetime OLIE convictions.
  • Qualified and licensed by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) or eligible to obtain a license.
  • Ability to complete a fire academy and obtain certification as Firefighter I and II in Michigan.
  • Good moral character.
  • No dishonorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces.
  • Successful completion of a psychological exam, physical test, and drug screening (marijuana prohibited).
