Position: Ultrasound Technologist I

Overview

Summary This position performs diagnostic ultrasound imaging including a variety of procedures (invasive and non-invasive) ranging from biopsies, routine OB/GYN, limited vascular, abdomen, small body parts to intra-cavity and color Doppler. Technologist must have strong critical thinking, interpersonal skills and the ability to problem-solve while assuming responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients in the technologist's care. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to deal effectively with and instruct patients who may be under physical or emotional stress.

Ability to comprehend and follow physicians’ verbal orders and imaging protocols. The technologist will also need to work productively within a complex environment of inpatient, emergency department and outpatient circumstances by multitasking with changing priorities.

The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for obtaining information such as patient identity, history, reviewing medical records for appropriateness of the exam or procedure and documentation accuracy. The technologist must maintain a high standard of medical ethics and be self-motivated to pursue lifelong learning to increase understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve. Provides excellent customer service.

Responsibilities
  • (60%) Produces quality images by selecting the appropriate technical factors, equipment and transducer settings. Verifies patient orders and reviews appropriateness for exam, obtains patient history, explains standard procedures, and addresses patient concerns to foster comfort and confidence so the needs of individual patients are met. Determines if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes while using independent judgment to differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
  • (20%) Operates sonographic equipment independently, performs and communicates findings of diagnostic examinations, manages daily department operations, patient scheduling, equipment maintenance, reports equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). Maintains a clean work environment and adequate supplies.
  • (20%) Responsible for appropriate sterilization techniques along with documentation accuracy of logs, charts, forms, and records in paper and electronic formats. Complies with all The Joint Commission, federal, state, and local regulatory laws, standards, and protocols.
  • Other duties Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician. Provides ultrasound guidance for biopsies/aspirations. Prepares equipment and supplies; observes sterile techniques, assists physician as needed. Delivers quality patient care and maintains patient confidentiality and medical ethics. Communicates effectively with staff, physicians and patients. Maintains a clean work environment and provides excellent customer service.

    Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attends/participates in departmental and medical center meetings. Performs other work-related duties as assigned and participates in on-call duties as needed. Shifts may include long hours, nights, weekends and holidays as required. Conducts duties in alignment with department and hospital goals.
Qualifications
  • Certifications and Licensures
    • ARDMS AB - Abdominal Ultrasound Tech
    • ARDMS OBGY - OB/GYN Ultrasound Tech
    • ULTRA C I - ARDMS-RVT OR CCI-RVS
    • Preferred: BLS - Basic Life Support
  • Education
    • Associates Degree (required)
    • Comments:
      Associate's Degree in Healthcare Related Field preferred
  • Experience, Training and Skills
    • Registry eligible new graduates may apply
    • Interpersonal skills to communicate with individuals and groups at all levels
    • Mandatory OSHA training annually per Exposure Control Plan
    • Current CME compliance and ARDMS/CCI re-credentialing as appropriate
Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including trauma, grief and death
  • Ability to wear PPE; move about facility with or without assisted device
  • Vision and hearing adequate with or without assistive devices
  • Frequent sitting/standing/walking; occasional bending or kneeling
  • Exposure to blood borne pathogens; follow safety protocols
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, and maintain regular attendance
  • Physical demand:
    Light; occasional lifting 11-20 lbs, frequent handling and dexterity
