Overview
The Library Programming & Outreach Manager is responsible for developing, coordinating, and evaluating library programming across all branches and age groups. This role supervises staff who plan programs, collaborates across service areas and adapts programming responsibilities based on staff expertise. The Manager leads outreach initiatives, maintains partnerships, and reports statistics, budgets, and outcomes to the Director. The position also contributes to collection development and may oversee staff at more than one branch.
Responsibilities- Oversee the design, implementation, and assessment of programs across all age groups; work collaboratively with programming staff to ensure consistent delivery of youth, teen, and adult programming, stepping into any programming area as needed to maintain service levels; ensure all programming supports the Library’s mission, goals, and community needs; and lead library outreach strategy and partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and civic groups.
- Curate and maintain a collection of books, media and digital resources tailored to the interests and needs of various ages with support from assigned staff; monitor usage patterns and assess the relevance of materials to ensure the collection remains current, diverse, and responsive to community needs.
- Supervise programming staff, which may include multiple branches, with obtaining and preparing all necessary materials; propose new programs and special events in response to customer and community requests and needs; oversee program planning procedures; manage and coordinate volunteers and community service workers for the Main Branch; provide leadership, training, coaching, scheduling, and performance feedback to assigned staff; and collect and maintain statistics for programming, outreach, and services.
- Prepare reports and budget recommendations for programming and outreach; serve on the Library’s Leadership Team and assist with systemwide goals, policies, and procedures; assist with grant writing and fundraising efforts aimed at enhancing teen and adult services; review and resolve patron problems within established guidelines.
- Bachelor’s degree in Library Science, Education, Public Administration or a related field; candidates currently pursuing a postsecondary degree in these fields may also be considered.
- Strong communication skills both orally and in writing; calm demeanor and tact in responding to customer questions and/or complaints and dealing with the public in everyday activities.
- Knowledge of library operations and procedures; ability to learn City and department policies and procedures; knowledge of modern office procedures, methods and office/computer equipment, including telephones and telephone etiquette; knowledge of filing alphabetically, numerically, by category and chronologically.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; ability to initiate, plan, and organize multiple projects; flexible to a variety of work situations and interruptions; ability to work independently in the absence of supervision and within established guidelines.
- Must participate in employee performance evaluations in accordance with the City of Bay City Employee Guidelines for City Employees; must pass a medical physical examination, drug test, and criminal background check.
