Position Overview

The Health & Safety Specialist provides technical and field-based support for the site's occupational health and safety programs within a chemical manufacturing environment. This position partners with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Security, contractors, and other site functions to identify and mitigate workplace hazards, strengthen safe work practices, support regulatory compliance, and promote safe and reliable manufacturing operations.

The Health & Safety Specialist supports key programs and activities including field safety, contractor safety, incident investigations, regulatory compliance, safety training, audits and inspections, emergency preparedness, and corrective action management. This role serves as a visible Health & Safety resource in the field and contributes to Process Safety Management (PSM), safety performance improvement, and other initiatives that strengthen employee engagement, regulatory compliance, and the site's overall safety culture.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provide technical and field-based Health & Safety support to Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Security, contractors, and other site functions to identify hazards, evaluate risk, and support the safe execution of work.
  • Conduct routine field observations, workplace inspections, safety assessments, and hazard evaluations; communicate findings and partner with responsible departments to develop and implement appropriate corrective actions.
  • Administer and support assigned occupational safety programs and safe work practices, including Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), personal protective equipment (PPE), hazard communication, lockout/tagout, confined space entry, hot work, and other applicable site safety programs.
  • Provide Health & Safety guidance and field support during routine operations, maintenance activities, construction, outages, turnarounds, and other non-routine or higher-risk work activities.
  • Support the site's contractor safety program, including contractor orientation, field oversight, safety performance, and coordination with contractor and site representatives to address identified safety concerns.
  • Participate and lead in incident and near-miss investigations, including fact gathering, root cause analysis, documentation of findings, identification of corrective actions, and communication of lessons learned.
  • Track corrective actions resulting from incidents, audits, inspections, assessments, and safety observations and work with responsible departments to support timely and effective closure.
  • Support compliance with applicable OSHA regulations, Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements, company standards, site procedures, and other applicable Health & Safety requirements.
  • Participate in Health & Safety audits, regulatory compliance assessments, inspections, and reviews; identify potential gaps and support the development and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Support applicable elements of the site's Process Safety Management program and collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering on safety considerations associated with Management of Change (MOC), Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR), operating procedures, and other PSM-related activities.
  • Develop, review, and maintain Health & Safety procedures, standards, guidance documents, training materials, inspection records, and other program documentation.
  • Develop and deliver Health & Safety training, contractor orientations, toolbox talks, safety meetings, and other safety education and awareness programs.
  • Support emergency preparedness and response activities, including emergency planning, drills, exercises, response procedures, and coordination with site emergency response resources.
  • Support occupational health and industrial hygiene activities, including identification of potential workplace exposures and coordination of monitoring, evaluation, and corrective actions with appropriate resources.
