Participate in the manual labor associated with the operation, maintenance, repair and construction of the storm drainage system and roadway system including patching pot holes, laying asphalt, pouring concrete, and installing traffic signs. Assist with preparation and disassembly of work sites including placing and removing barricades; maintain safety regulations including wearing appropriate clothing & PPE, erecting proper barricades and signage and using proper equipment and materials.
Assist with clearing roadside and other City properties by trimming trees, cutting brush, raking and hoeing. Operate a variety of complex equipment, machinery and tools including: trucks, backhoes, air compressors, jackhammers, pumps, loaders, dozers, concrete saws and mixers, hammer drills, generators, chain saws, tractors, mowers and other similar equipment and machinery. Sets up traffic safety devices and barricades as necessary.
Perform traffic control as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
A minimum of one (1) year responsible experience in roadway construction, maintenance and repair relating to streets and bridges. Knowledge of procedures and techniques used in roadway construction and maintenance. Knowledge of equipment and techniques used in minor construction, maintenance and repair tasks. Knowledge of and proficient in, the use of tools and equipment required in maintenance and repair activities. Knowledge of and ability to follow safety procedures used on the job.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work independently and make decisions. Ability to perform basic math functions to layout and estimate materials needed for job.
Must pass a medical physical examination and drug test. Must pass a criminal background check. High School diploma or GED. Valid Class C Texas State Driver's License and safe driving record. Must have good communication skills; requires a calm demeanor in responding to customer questions/and or complaints, and dealing with the general public in everyday activities. Ability to work within established guidelines.
Ability to perform repetitious tasks. Ability to use and operate pick-up truck, dump truck, tractor, forklift, front-end loader, dozer, and miscellaneous power tools. This position is considered a Level I position in accordance with Section 6.11.6 of the Personnel Guidelines.
