The Coastal Alabama Chamber Singers, Jazz Band, and Coastal Sound are student ensembles whose performances are greatly enhanced by the assistance of a professional/semi-professional accompanist. The position requires availability for MUL 180/280/181/281 Chorus rehearsals, as well as Vocal Ensemble sessions, Convocation, Fall Recital, Spring Recital, departmental juries, school-related competitions, and additional performances as needed. Availability required during MUL class/rehearsal times on Tuesday and Thursday mornings on the Fairhope campus, and additional rehearsals as needed.

The MUL accompanist is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend on any Coastal Alabama Community College campus as assigned. The accompanist must adhere to the general faculty guidelines as specified by the College Policies and Procedures Manual, Department policies and procedures, the Dean of Academic Instruction, and the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees.

Appropriate placement on the local hourly salary schedule $41.60 per hour (up to 19 hours per week).

At a minimum, the essential functions of this position shall include:

Provides piano accompaniment for practice, rehearsals, and performances of MUL ensembles.

Leads sectional rehearsals by playing parts, vocal warm-ups, identifying mistakes and problem areas, correcting mistakes and providing accurate notes and rhythms to student performers.

Coaches soloists and ensembles with intonation issues, teaching good vocal techniques, and providing suggestions regarding interpretation of music.

Provides assistance to the MUL Director by leading rehearsals as necessary.

Effectively communicates with student performers.

Provides high-level musical instruction assistance in diction, rhythms, and memorization of vocal parts.

Remains active at a high level of expertise in the field and stimulate enthusiasm for the field by keeping informed of current trends and new approaches to accompaniment via professional development activities.

Required Qualifications

Advanced piano skills.

Advanced Music Theory knowledge.

Good sight-reading skills.

Good sense of rhythm.

Well-developed ear.

Understanding of proper vocal technique.

Preferred Qualifications

Post-secondary degree in a music discipline.

Accompaniment experience at the postsecondary level.

An understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and mission of a comprehensive community college.

Commitment to all students and faculty including those of diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds.

An understanding of the broad range of students' abilities in an open admissions college and the ability to communicate to the community college student population.

Demonstrated speaking and writing skills.
