Position Description

This work is conducted at the Baldwin County Corrections Center and Baldwin County Courthouse. An employee in this position is responsible for the care, custody, and control of the inmate population. Work involves security tasks associated with incarceration, such as understanding inmate behavior. It also involves related clerical functions such as completing reports, reporting inmate counts, and entering data into a computer.

All work is performed in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines under the direct supervision of the Corrections Commander and Supervisors.

Successful applicants must pass a criminal background check and will be subject to a pre-employment drug screen.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment is a secured facility with an inmate population. Works in enclosed spaces for extended periods of time. Works around high noise areas such as inmate pods, laundry room and kitchen with intercom systems. Works in a physically and mentally stressful environment. Works around inmates who may possess sharp tools such as knives, razors, shanks, and sharpened toothbrushes. Work may expose employees to chemicals, communicable disease and blood borne pathogens.

Job Functions

• Monitor conduct of inmates according to established policies, regulations, and procedures, to prevent escape or violence.

• Inspect conditions of locks, window bars, grills, doors, gates, and perimeters to ensure that they will prevent escapes.

• Search inmates, cells, and vehicles for weapons, valuables, or drugs.

• Guard facility entrances to screen visitors.

• Search for and recapture escapees.

• Inspect mail for the presence of contraband.

• Take inmates into custody and escort to locations within and outside of facility, such as visiting room, courtroom, or hospital.

• Record information, such as inmate identification, charges, and incidences of inmate disturbance.

• Use weapons, handcuffs, and physical force to maintain discipline and order among inmates.

• Conduct fire, safety, and sanitation inspections.

• Provide information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail or in person.

• Observe, receive, and obtain information from all relevant sources.

• Enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in written or electronic form.

• Identify information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events.

• Handle complaints, settle disputes, and resolve grievances and conflicts.

• Use relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards.

• Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others and maintaining them over time.

• Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.

• Work includes rotating shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and may require unforeseen overtime.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is generally medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Activities could occasionally require heavy to very heavy work, exerting up to 100 or more pounds of force. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

• Must possess the ability to restrain and/or detain an inmate for an undisclosed amount of time

• Crouching:
Bending the body downwards and forward by bending leg and spine

• Dexterity:
Primarily with fingers and in picking, pinching or typing

Applying pressure with the whole hand

Picking, holding or otherwise working with the whole hand
