Job Description
Manages and has 24/7 responsibility for the nursing practice, patient care delivery, human and fiscal resources, and regulatory compliance of a patient care unit. Maintains a professional environment that supports delivery of high-quality patient and family centered care.
Job Responsibilities- Manages and has 24/7 responsibility for the team members, operations and patient care activities of a patient care unit.
- Assists nursing leadership in setting strategic direction for key programs in alignment with organization mission, vision, and values and nursing strategic plan.
- Communicates, builds consensus, and guides team toward achieving department objectives.
- Promotes and maintains high quality patient and family centered care in a healing environment.
- Creates a professional work environment that fosters team member respect, engagement, accountability and optimal patient outcomes.
- Promotes appreciative inquiry and evidence‑based, ethical and compassionate practice.
- Acquires and manages staffing for patient care unit. Collaborates with HR for requirements.
- Provides direction and guidance to patient care unit team members and supervisors.
- Facilitates performance reviews, promotions, pay and corrective actions.
- Serves as a role model for standards of professional practice (clinical, educational and leadership).
- Assists in career development planning for team members.
- Educates teams in new and existing department procedures and systems (information systems, fiscal responsibility, etc.).
- Manages patient care unit budget. Monitors expenditures and implements action plans when variances are present.
- Monitors performance metrics that support decision‑making to achieve optimal performance levels.
- Ensures adherence to the established care delivery model, using knowledge of scope and standards of practice.
- Facilitates continual compliance for unit with the JC, CMS, New York State, DOH, Public Health Law, HIPPA regulations and System, hospital and department standards.
- Demonstrates current knowledge of clinical competencies for patient population of oversight in order to manage direct patient care.
- Maintains current knowledge of scope and standards of practice, healthcare legislation, and population health.
- Identifies and leads opportunities to make changes to improve operations across teams using evidence‑based strategies and solutions.

- Bachelors of Science Degree, required (Bachelor or Master’s Degree must be in Nursing).
- Masters preferred.
- Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State, required.
- Specialized certifications, as needed.
- 6-8 years of nursing experience and 2-5 years of leadership/management experience, required.
