Job title:

Bookseller. A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and connecting readers with the right titles and products. You are also part of maintaining attractive store presentation and ensuring efficient operation, including unpacking and shelving deliveries, tidying displays, and operating registers to provide professional service.

You’ll make a great Bookseller if you have what we term to be good “behaviors.” You and your Store Manager will reinforce these expectations.

• Maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
• Fill scheduling gaps when able; support store needs as we are open from early mornings to late evenings, including weekends and most holidays.
• Be positive and willing in your approach to work, perform assigned tasks with purpose and energy, and work reliably.
• Be supportive and considerate of colleagues, helping others on the team and showing kindness.
• Be cheerful with customers and go out of your way to help them.

You will be trained and expected to be proficient in:

• Using registers, computers, tablets, programs and other tools comfortably and efficiently.
• Developing merchandising skills to maintain book presentation and store cleanliness.
• Developing visual merchandising skills for gifting, toys and other product categories.
• Running a register to serve customers quickly and reliably.
• Supporting receiving and unpacking of deliveries and subsequent shelving.
• Finding books and products using knowledge, colleagues, Book Master and information tools.
• Supporting the café team when needed.
• Understanding loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques, identifying theft, and seeking support for issues in the store.

Note:

This role requires physical activity, including prolonged standing, bending, lifting and walking. You may work in other stores to support the wider cluster as needed.

As you gain experience, you should expect your bookselling knowledge and skills to develop. You may advance to Senior Bookseller with new challenges and growth opportunities.

• Build knowledge of fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books to maintain sections and present books attractively.
• Make effective book recommendations and support sales objectives such as Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, and Membership programs.
• Build expertise in Educational Toys & Games, Specialty Games, Hobby and Collectibles, music and movies, and Newsstand; apply knowledge to assist customers and maintain sections.
• Use knowledge to maintain sections and backstock and to assist customers with shopping.
• Support the success of key sales objectives, products and new releases.

Benefits vary by schedule and location. For schedules below 20 hours per week, benefits may include Employee Discount, EAP and Sick Pay.
