TITLE:
Special Education Teacher

SUPERVISES:
Assigned Assistant Teacher

TERM: 10 months (200-day contract)

JOB GOAL: To plan, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program in an elementary learning environment that guides and encouraged students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.

QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING:

  • Bachelor's degree as required by the State of Tennessee
  • Teacher's certificate with qualifying endorsement area
  • FBI/TBI Fingerprint/Background Clearance every five (5) years

Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent might find appropriate and acceptable.

EVALULATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts and maintains a highly organized and professionally functioning classroom.
  • Administers developmental testing programs, subject specific assessments, etc. for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans.
  • Collaborates with other faculty in the delivery of appropriate instructional approaches.
  • Assesses student progress toward objectives, expectations, and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Shows empathy and understanding of students.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (adaptive materials, progress reports, attendance, anecdotal records, IEPS, behavior, logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Proactively resolves problems that might arise with students and parents.
  • Directs assistant teacher, student teachers, substitutes, volunteers, and/or student workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Facilitates students' learning for the purpose of improving the students' academic success and transition out of the special education program, when applicable and appropriate.
  • Follows policies established by Jackson Madison County School Board and Tennessee State Department of Education.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
