Job Description- Job Title: Resident Teacher

Purpose:
The Resident Teacher (RT) is a student teacher who participates in a yearlong clinical experience under the guidance of a highly effective host teacher (HT). The RT observes and learns on the job in preparation for a teaching career while earning a degree and/or certification from UHCL. For a full school year, the RT works alongside the HT. The RT is actively engaged in as many elements of the classroom as possible from the beginning of the residency year and gradually assumes greater responsibilities throughout the year.
- Enrolled in the UHCL residency program, working towards a teaching certificate.
- Complete all certification requirements by the end of the residency year.
- Strong work ethic, open to feedback, willingness to implement next steps, belief that all students can achieve.
- Demonstrated effectiveness working with people who have differing cultural backgrounds and/or personal characteristics, including race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or economic differences, with preference given for experience working successfully with those of similar demographics to the desired school placement.
- Knowledge of subject matter being taught.
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
- Co‑plan and co‑teach with HT and other team members, leading small‑group instruction and leading instruction without the HT present.
- Attend professional development prior to the start of the school year and ongoing throughout the school year.
- Participate in team planning, Professional Learning Communities, school‑based professional development, campus faculty meetings, and meetings with the Site Coordinator.
- Work with the HT to monitor and improve instruction with formative and summative assessments, grading, data analysis, and rubrics to identify next steps.
- Adapt and improve standards‑aligned, differentiation‑ready lesson plans that motivate strong student learning, after learning to deliver such lessons prepared by the HT and/or experienced team members.
- Manage procedures, supervise students, and develop students’ social‑emotional skills during transitions, lunch, recess, assemblies, and other activities, while team teachers plan or deliver instruction.
- Embrace feedback from HTs and the Field Supervisor before, during, and after informal and formal observations.
- Substitute within the school placement one day per week (applicable to candidates in the paid residency).
- Take responsibility for other non‑instructional duties as assigned by the HT and/or campus administrators.
- Utilize district resources to co‑plan, prepare, and internalize lessons with increasing responsibility across the residency year.
- Plan backward to align all lessons, activities, and assessments with high‑expectation standards & curriculum.
- Implement and suggest improvements to instruction that develop higher‑order thinking skills and are personalized, reflecting the levels and interests of individual students.
- Implement and suggest improvements to assessments that accurately assess student progress.
- Identify and address individual students’ social, emotional, and behavioral learning needs and barriers.
- Hold students accountable for ambitious, measurable, high expectations of behavior and engagement.
- Contribute to a culture of respect, enthusiasm, and positive rapport.
- Manage student behavior during transitions and less structured time (e.g., recess, lunch, dismissal).
