The Operations Engineer will support the design, maintenance, and optimization of mechanical systems and equipment within the steel pipe manufacturing facility. Depending on business needs, the engineer may be assigned to the ERW Pipe Mill, Heat Treat facility, or Stretch Reduction Mill, gaining exposure to a range of mechanical and industrial processes. This role provides hands‑on experience in industrial manufacturing, working closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to ensure equipment reliability, process efficiency, and safe operations.
This role will report directly into the Director, ERW Mill & Investments or as assigned.
Primarily works within the production mill environment with moderate administrative office work. Exposure to heat, noise, and moving machinery; PPE required at all times. Must be able to stand/walk for extended periods, climb stairs, and occasionally lift up to 30 lbs. May require shift work, including nights or weekends, depending on production schedule or during major maintenance or startups. Production is working 7/24 and following and assisting of production required outside of the office time.
Qualifications- A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field required.
- 3–5 years of relevant experience.
- Understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and industrial equipment.
- Mechanical systems design capability includes bearings, shafts, and gear boxes. Eager to do design thinking.
- Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, Solid Works, or similar) is required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, especially Excel and PowerBI.
- Strong problem‑solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Strong teamwork skills and eagerness to learn from experienced engineers.
- Knowledge in Lean/6 Sigma Production Methodology, time studies and 5S preferred.
- Follow and promote safe work practices, ensuring compliance with company and regulatory standards.
- Participate in risk assessments, preventive maintenance, and safety audits.
- Identify potential risks for the crew and lead preventive actions.
- Lead mechanical design, modifications, and upgrades of plant equipment.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and specifications.
- Apply engineering principles to improve machine performance and operational reliability.
- Initiate projects for digitalization and process automations.
- Collaborate closely with Quality and Maintenance teams to make improvements.
- Assist in the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of mechanical systems in assigned facility.
- Lead troubleshooting and problem‑solving to minimize equipment downtime.
- Discover improvement opportunities and identify new ideas for the facility.
- Participate in root‑cause analyses and recommend mechanical or process improvements.
- Collaborate with production and maintenance teams to enhance process efficiency, safety, and product quality.
- Define process parameters for the processes and teach the crew new techniques.
- Assist production team leaders and supervisors for technical problems.
- Lead maintenance plans and maintenance.
- Collect and analyze equipment and process performance data across assigned facility.
- Assist in preparing reports and recommendations for process optimization.
- Follow Daily KPI results and take actions.
- Prepare project and monthly reports.
- Participate in training programs to develop technical and industry‑specific skills.
- Learn company processes, ERW manufacturing standards, and best practices in heat treatment and stretch reduction operations.
- This position has the authority to stop work for reasons of quality or safety.
- Other duties as assigned.
