Job Summary
Combination welding job requiring proficiency in SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and other arc welding processes. May require x‑ray qualifications. Responsibilities include laying out, aligning, and welding fabricated, cast, and forged components to assemble structural forms such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, buildings, and pipe, according to blueprints and metallurgy.
Responsibilities- Select pipe or other materials and equipment according to specifications
- Plan layouts, assembly, and welding using knowledge of geometry, metal properties, weld shrinkage, and welding techniques
- Use various arc welding processes (GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, SAW, SMAW)
- Lay out, position, align and fit components; bolt, clamp and weld metal components in various positions
- Tack weld assemblies; connect cable to welding unit; obtain amperage, voltage, slope, pulse as specified
- Insert electrode, start power supply, strike arc to melt and deposit metal, guide electrode or gun along weld line
- Maintain arc length, speed and movement to form specified bead depth, judged by metal color, sound, and puddle size
- Apply filler rod; clean or degrease weld joint or workplace; repair broken or cracked parts; remove excess weld, slag, spatter; preheat workpiece; cut metal plates or shapes
- Examine weld for bead size and other specifications
- Load, transport and unload material, tools, equipment and supplies; assist in lifting and positioning
- Perform minor maintenance or cleaning of tools and equipment; assist other mechanics
- Use respiratory protection; pass employer performance tests or certification standards; observe safety and project rules; perform other duties as required
- High school diploma or equivalent with previous experience in welding or related field
- Knowledge of commonly‑used concepts, practices, and procedures within the welding field
- Ability to work under immediate supervision and follow pre‑established guidelines
- Ability to perform tasks that typically do not require independent judgment; reports to supervisor or manager
- Apply basic mathematics to solve problems; plan work and select proper tools; visualize objects in 3‑D from drawings
- Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy; make decisions based on measurable criteria
