Summer Cohort Graduate Nurse (GN) – 2026 – Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital

Graduate Nurse (GN) specialties available at the Houston Methodist Baytown campus include Medical Surgical – Observation. The GN is an entry level nurse who, under the supervision of an experienced RN, demonstrates the ability to progress in skill to care for increasingly complex patients, receiving coaching from experienced nurses and management.

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of Nursing; may consider an Associates degree from an accredited school of Nursing.
• Zero years of experience. Completion of nursing degree which includes clinical rotation(s) in a hospital setting.
• Licenses: GN – Graduate Nurse Temporary – Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation; BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
• Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential job functions.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Outlook.

• Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job.
• Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers.
• Progression towards competent assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
• Progression towards demonstrating time management skills.
• Ability to progress towards independence and exercise judgment in interactions with healthcare team.
• Progression towards critical thinking skills and clinical judgment as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.

• Establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional team, collaborating on the plan of care by using progressive skills in therapeutic communication.

Service

Essential Functions:

• Follow patient and family-centered care standards as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.
• Develop, update, and communicate plan of care under RN supervision, including discharge planning.
• Provide patient education based on learning needs, using appropriate resources and adapting teaching methods.
• Apply expected behaviors to improve department score for patient satisfaction on unit-based scorecard.

Quality/Safety

Essential Functions:

• Follow standards of care related to the nursing process as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.
• Follow regulatory requirements and professional practice standards.
• Provide and modify care in a progressive manner for increasingly complex patients, coordinating care with the interprofessional health care teams.
• Apply expected behaviors to improve quality and safety scores on unit-based scorecard.

• Manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks to minimize overtime.
