Purpose and Scope

Supports FMCNA's mission, vision, core values, and customer service philosophy. Adheres to the FMCNA Compliance Program, including all regulatory and company policy requirements. Functions as part of the hemodialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for assigned patients under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. Participates in the implementation and evaluation of patient care. Reports and documents all incidents, complaints, or problems to the supervisor.

Promotes and assists in maintaining a safe and clean work environment.

Customer Service Responsibilities
  • Drive the FMCNA culture through values and customer service standards.
  • Accountable for outstanding customer service to all external and internal customers.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships through timely communication.
  • Initiate action to respond, resolve, and follow up on customer service issues in a timely manner.
Principal Responsibilities and Duties

Patient–Related

  • Provide direct patient care for assigned patient(s).
  • Perform all technical aspects of dialysis procedures as prescribed.
  • Administer and monitor treatments according to the current plan or supervisor direction.
  • Monitor and document dialysis treatment parameters on flow sheets.
  • Document other information related to patient care in the individual record.
  • Report significant changes in patient condition or equipment problems to the supervisor.
  • Assist in developing and following a teaching plan to educate patients and families about renal disease, dialysis therapy, diet, and medications.
  • Assist with emergency operational procedures and administer intravenous medication per physician orders and practice laws.
  • Perform and document pre, interim, and post‑treatment reviews of patient condition.
  • Initiate basic CPR measures in the event of cardiac/pulmonary arrest and respond to emergency situations.

Technical

  • Safely operate all dialysis–related equipment according to proper procedures.
  • Provide minor troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment in the dialysis facility.
  • Address blood spills immediately according to FMCNA Bloodborne Pathogen Control Policies.
  • Operate all emergency equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures.

Staff Related

  • Participate in scheduled staff meetings and care plan meetings.
  • Acquire knowledge in current dialysis practice and technique through in‑service classes.
  • Act as a resource person for other staff members.
  • Coordinate care plans with physicians, dietitians, and social workers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Day‑to‑day work involves desk and computer work, interaction with patients, staff, and physicians, and direct patient care that includes heavy lifting, moving patients, and assisting ambulation. Requires frequent, prolonged periods of standing, bending, and may involve moving machines and equipment weighing up to 200lbs and chemical water solutions up to 30lbs. Must be able to lift and move with assistance, and withstand travel between assigned facilities and across the community.

Work environment is a health care facility with air‑temperature control and moderate noise levels. May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases/materials.

Education

Graduate of an accredited School of Practical Nursing (LPN, LVN) with current appropriate State licensure.

Experience and Required Skills
  • One year of medical–surgical nursing experience preferred.
  • Hemodialysis experience preferred but not required.
  • ICU experience preferred but not required.
  • Completion of a training course in the theory and practice of hemodialysis.
  • Successful CPR certification.
  • Completion of the Nurses Technical Training Program upon hire or soon thereafter.
  • Ability to provide coverage at area facilities during short‑staffing or as required.
  • Meeting the color blindness test requirement (Ishihara).
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
