Summary

Helper level: 0 to 42 months. Preferred minimum of 6 months documented field experience in the chosen craft discipline. Ability to read and interpret instructions and documentation. The level and degree of responsibilities and requirements vary depending on months of experience and assigned job step.

Responsibilities
  • Construct, fabricate, install and dismantle form work of metal, wood and other accessories.
  • Build wooden structures such as stairs, concrete forms, scaffolds, tunnel and sewer supports, and temporary frame shelters according to blueprints or oral instructions; lay out and install partitions and cabinet work.
  • Examine blueprints, sketches or building plans to determine required materials and dimensions of structures or fixtures to be fabricated.
  • Select, load and haul job material to the work site.
  • Prepare layout of forms or fixtures using lines or grades.
  • Measure boards, timbers or plywood with square, measuring tape and ruler, marking cutting lines with pencil and scriber; shape materials to required sizes using saws, chisels and planes.
  • Verify accuracy of structures with transit, plumb bob, square and level instruments.
  • Use carpentry hand tools such as hammers, levels, squares, screwdrivers, adjustable wrenches, hand and power saws, drill motors and pry bars.
  • Nail cleats (braces) across boards to construct concrete‑supporting forms.
  • Brace forms in place with timbers, tie rods and anchor bolts for building concrete piers, footings and walls.
  • Erect framework for structures and lay sub‑flooring.
  • Cut and assemble timbers to build trestles and cofferdams.
  • Erect scaffold for buildings and other structures, and install ladders, handrails, walkways, platforms and gangways.
  • Construct forms, chutes and align form panels for pouring concrete and grout.
  • Fit and install pre‑fabricated window frames, doors, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim and finished hardware.
  • Fit and nail sheathing on outer walls and roofs; set and brace anchor bolts.
  • Perform minor maintenance or cleaning activities with tools and equipment.
  • Tie rebar where required.
  • Operate electric and pneumatic tools.
  • May rig materials.
  • Observe and comply with all safety and project rules; perform other duties as required.
Job Requirements

  • Observe flat drawings or diagrams and understand how they would look as solid objects.
  • Apply basic mathematical skills.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent with previous years of experience in the field or a related area (preferred).
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within the field.
  • Relies on instructions and pre‑established guidelines; works under immediate supervision.
  • Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment.
  • Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
