Job ResponsibilitiesThe Meter Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing water meters, meter boxes, and meter interface units to ensure accurate and reliable utility service throughout the community. The role includes connecting, reconnecting, and disconnecting water service at the meter, handling delinquent accounts by locking and assisting with meter removal when necessary, performing tests on 5/8” and 1” meters, and reporting suspected theft of service to supervisors in a timely manner.
- Connect and disconnect water service and use a handheld computer to obtain current readings. Disconnect delinquent accounts for non‑payment, perform rechecks, install locks on meters when water is illegally turned back on, pull meters when necessary, reconnect service after an outstanding balance is paid, assist in installing new meters, and alert supervisors of any suspected theft of service.
- Utilize a handheld computer to obtain readings for the billing system and verify low and high readings for accuracy.
- Assist in solving meter problems detected by the drive‑by unit; change meters, registers, meter interface devices, cutoffs, meter boxes and lids as needed; use a handheld computer to confirm device functionality; perform meter tests for accurate registration; move fire hydrant meters; pull warranty items for shipment; and report damaged city property to a supervisor.
- Maintain city property in possession: truck, tools, handheld computer, and phone. Apply defensive driving training, keep supervisors aware of equipment and vehicle malfunctions, and keep the vehicle clean inside and out.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Six months of general work experience.
- Must obtain a Class “D” Water Operator License from TCEQ within two years of hire date.
- Six months experience in meter maintenance and water system operations.
- Knowledge of basic math.
- Computer skills necessary to operate a handheld computer.
- Skilled with tools required to replace and/or repair meters.
- Computer literate with the ability to read and write legibly.
- Ability to read meters and obtain correct readings.
- Must get along appropriately with co‑workers and the public.
- Ability to lift heavy objects, stoop, and bend.
Attendance is an essential function of this position. The City reserves the right to require overtime. Services may be performed for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations and during evacuations.
Physical DemandsMedium work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
