Summary

Operates and maintains equipment by performing preventative maintenance (lubricating, cleaning, adding gear lubricants, changing bucket cables) and documents all activities performed daily. The operator performs duties on various equipment, including D-9 dozer, front‑end loader tractors, backhoe, dump truck, cherry picker, moveable crane, etc., used in rail repair, new rail track laying, crossing and bridge repair. Follows TGS and customer procedures, policies, safety rules, security rules and federal/state laws.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operates equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Works independently without or with little supervision, working to meet productivity goals.
  • Cross‑train in operation of any equipment as required by TGS, Inc.
  • Perform jobs in production, housekeeping, maintenance, clerical, operation, labor, etc. as assigned, including work at any TGS, Inc. location.
  • Assist Foreman by setting an example and leading other employees in daily work duties as directed.
  • Observe crane load hookup and determine safety of load.
  • Manipulate or depress equipment controls (pedals, levers, buttons) to regulate speed and direction of crane and hoist movement.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment and hoisting mechanism.
  • Performs daily lubrication and preventive maintenance, keeping records of all work performed.
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems and perform minor repairs.
  • Inspect equipment for defective parts, document daily inspections and notify supervisor of defects or malfunctions.
  • Maintain equipment by performing preventive maintenance (lubricating, cleaning, adding gear lubricants, changing filters) and document all activity performed.
  • Fasten attachments, hoses, power take‑off, mechanical linkage to dozers, loaders, tractor‑trailer, cherry picker, etc.
  • Operate D‑9 bulldozer in successive passes over terrain to raise or lower terrain to specified grade.
  • Maintain a current valid state commercial driver’s license to perform tractor‑trailer or dump truck driving services.
  • Hold a valid heavy equipment operator’s certificate as required by TGS and/or customer for the heavy equipment operated.
  • Perform other routine duties as may be assigned.
  • Clean and perform housekeeping duties of the work area.
  • Perform activities of co‑workers as directed.
  • Be willing to work shifts and/or overtime hours during the week and/or weekends as dictated by operations.
  • Regular work attendance is required to appropriately perform essential duties of this job.

Special Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Pass background checks & drug test required by TGS at all TGS locations.
  • Obtain a TWIC card.
  • Understand operational characteristics of a variety of heavy, power‑driven equipment.
  • Know maintenance requirements of heavy, power‑driven equipment.
  • Know methods and materials used in general construction and maintenance work.
  • Know principles and techniques of field maintenance activities.
  • Know traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in heavy equipment operation.
  • Acknowledge occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Operate heavy power‑driven equipment.
  • Perform a variety of skilled construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Read and interpret maps, sketches, drawings, specifications, and technical manuals.
  • Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods in unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Learn soil composting techniques.
  • Prepare written reports and/or forms.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing or via radio.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.
