Position Summary

The Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Teacher at Hillcrest Elementary is responsible for creating a nurturing, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for students ages 3 to 5 with diverse learning needs. This role involves the design and implementation of individualized instruction, the management of IEPs, and close collaboration with the Early Childhood Diagnostic Team and families to ensure our youngest learners have the support they need to thrive.

Key Responsibilities
  • Targeted Learning:
    Design and implement specialized instruction in all developmental domains: cognitive, social-emotional, language, fine/gross motor, and self-help skills.
  • Play-Based Learning:
    Utilize evidence-based, play-centered strategies to engage students and promote naturalistic learning opportunities.
  • Classroom Management:
    Maintain a safe, structured, and stimulating environment that follows early childhood best practices (e.g., visual schedules, sensory-friendly zones).
IEP Management & Compliance
  • Case Management:
    Serve as the primary case manager for assigned students, ensuring all IEP goals and accommodations are implemented with fidelity.
  • Data Collection:
    Systematically collect and analyze data on student progress to inform instruction and prepare quarterly progress reports.
  • Collaborative Meetings:
    Lead or participate in IEP meetings, transition meetings (Birth-to-3), and domain meetings with a high degree of professionalism.
Family & Community Partnership
  • Communication:
    Maintain frequent and transparent communication with families regarding student progress and home-carryover strategies.
  • Transition Support:
    Facilitate smooth transitions for students entering from Early Intervention (Part

    C) or moving into Kindergarten.
Qualifications & Licensure Requirements (ISBE Standard) Required Education & Certification
  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or Early Childhood Education from an accredited institution.
  • Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with a valid Learning Behavior Specialist I (LBS1) endorsement.
Required Endorsements/Approvals

To meet Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) requirements for teaching students with disabilities ages 3–5, candidates must hold one of the following:

  • Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Approval (Added to an LBS1 or Early Childhood PEL).
  • Early Childhood Special Education Endorsement (Full B-3 or B-2 endorsement).

Note:

Candidates currently holding a PEL/LBS1 who are in the process of completing the four mandatory ECSE coursework areas (Development, Assessment, Methods, and Collaboration) are encouraged to apply and may be considered for a Short-Term Approval.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with Early Childhood Outcomes (ECO) reporting.
  • Knowledge of Creative Curriculum or similar play-based frameworks.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) proficiency is a significant asset in Beach Park District 3.
Working Conditions
  • Active classroom environment requiring the ability to engage with students on the floor, lift up to 40 lbs, and manage active movement.
  • Standard school hours with occasional after-school IEP or community events.
