Position Summary
The School Counselor is responsible for providing both proactive and responsive school counseling services to meet the unique intellectual, physical, social and emotional needs of each student through consultation with students, staff and parents.
Required Education, Experience & Qualifications
- Master's Degree in School Counseling
- Current Ohio Department of Education Licensure in School Counseling
- Meet all health requirements mandated by law
- Satisfactory completion of the BCII and FBI background check
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle license
Job Responsibilities & Duties
Planning & Preparation:
- Establish goals for the counseling programs appropriate to the situation, setting and age of the students
- Assist classroom teachers and administrators with appraisal services that identify student abilities, achievements and interests
- Provide guidance to students relative to available services, curricular choices, and educational/career planning
- Provide assistance to students and parents relative to transitioning between grade levels as well as post-secondary options
- Provide recommendations and assistance to students, teachers and/or parents in the decision making process for academic course and activities selections to meet graduation requirements
- Develop and implement an organized plan to evaluate the effectiveness of counseling programs
- Lead the planning and preparation for administration of local, state and national assessments
- Facilitate programs and activities to support the educational, emotional and social needs of students including drug prevention awareness and intervention, anti-bullying, family/peer relations, etc.
- Organize and coordinate the a variety of programs included but not limited to orientation, course selection, awards and parent information sessions.
- Participate on building IAT (Intervention Assistance Teams), IEP, Section 504 and staffing team meetings
Managing the Environment:
- Create an environment of respect and rapport by modeling appropriate behavior and managing student behavior accordingly
- Establish a culture of high expectations for student learning, achievement and pride in their work & accomplishments
- Create routines and transitions to keep students focused and on track with their goals & objectives
Delivery of Service:
- Assist in the formulation of academic, personal/social and career plans for individual as well as groups of students
- Provide a variety of consultation services as a resource person for teachers, parents and administrators in working with students
- Provide a range of counseling techniques to help students acquire skills in decision making and problem solving
- Counsel individual and small groups of students who have special concerns
- Collaborate internally and externally to provide resources to meet student needs
- Facilitate the transition process for students entering or leaving the school program
- Maintain annual updated scholarships, financial aid programs and career information materials
- Evaluate services and revise counseling program(s) as needed in response to student, parent or teacher input
- Lead the administration the implementation of local, state and national assessments and help students, staff and parents understand the abilities, aptitudes, interests and achievements of each student based on assessment data and records
- Serve as the building level 504 Coordinator;
Facilitate the 504 identification process by following the steps outlined in the District's 504 Procedure Manual;
Oversee the accurate completion of 504 Forms and Plans;
Monitor the delivery of services for eligible students with disabilities - Assist in the identification and placement of students into special programming when appropriate;
Help parents/students understand academic objectives, behavioral standards and performance expectations
Professional Responsibilities:
- Accurately reflect on individual effectiveness of counseling practice and outcome of programs and services; take appropriate action for continuous improvement
- Ensure accuracy of all reports, records and documentation and submit in a timely manner
- Provide frequent communication to families about counseling programming and other relevant information through a variety of means
- Ensure the confidentiality and security of student information, assessment data and academic records
- Develop relationships of mutual support and cooperation with colleagues, actively participating in professional learning communities and making a substantial contribution to school and district projects/activities
