Position: Teacher Aide (PPS)

Teacher Aide

This position is responsible for providing direct support to students in the school setting while assisting in the daily operation of the classroom and school environment. The Teacher Aide works under the direction of the classroom teacher and/or building administrator to help students access their educational program by providing supervision, prompting, redirection, and assistance with daily routines. Responsibilities include attending to students' physical needs, supporting positive behavior, assisting with transitions, monitoring student safety, preparing classroom materials, and performing routine clerical and organizational tasks.

Specific duties will vary based on student needs, grade level, and assigned program. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a teacher or principal. Supervision of others is not a function of this position.

Typical Work

Activities:

  • Provides direct support to students throughout the school day to promote safety, participation, and independence
  • Supports students during classroom routines by providing reminders, prompts, redirection, and encouragement to remain engaged and follow established expectations.
  • Assists in implementing behavior support strategies and established behavior management plans under the direction of school staff.
  • Escorts students to and from classrooms, buses, cafeterias, therapy sessions, restrooms, and other school locations.
  • Monitors students during classroom activities, transitions, lunch, recess, study hall, and other assigned school activities.
  • Helps maintain a safe, orderly, and positive learning environment.
  • Maintains simple records, including behavioral data.
  • Assists students in organizing materials, gathering belongings, and preparing for transitions and dismissal.
  • Provides positive role modeling in areas such as respect, responsibility, personal hygiene, and appropriate social interactions.
  • Assists with monitoring and supervising students during assessments or testing as directed.
  • Assists students with the use of classroom technology and adaptive equipment.
  • May record homework assignments or class notes for students when directed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned in support of students and the educational program.

Schedule:

  • Work schedule tailored to district needs and the employee's availability
  • 6.5-hour day based on school schedule with a 30-minute unpaid lunch

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • NYS Fingerprinting clearance required
  • Prior experience preferred, but not required

Civil Service Eligibility Required

Compensation per CSEA Contract

$17.20/hour
