Overview

School Nurse – The School Nurse plays an active role in the health and safety of students and staff. The School Nurse shall enforce state rules, regulations, and district policies to ensure the operations of the educational program. To provide assessment, screening, planning, intervention, evaluation, counseling, management and/or referrals concerning the health and medical care needs of students to minimize absences due to illness, maximize educational opportunities, and create a healthy school climate.

• Utilize practical nursing skills to perform medical treatments and procedures for students during school hours.
• Enforce immunization guidelines for all students according to Delaware State Law.
• Consult with students, school staff, parents and physicians concerning student health concerns.
• Administer vision, hearing and orthopedic screening.
• Keep accurate records and reports as required by Delaware statutes, policies, and federal regulations.
• Establish and maintain good rapport and communication with students, school personnel, parents, and community.
• Participate as the health care professional at student service meetings.
• Participate in staff development activities to prevent and control contagious diseases, increase knowledge and enhance nursing care.
• Provide staff development regarding health care issues.
• Assist in surveillance and detection of illnesses.
• Collaborate with health care providers, students' parents, school district staff and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of care for students.
• Assist in establishing and maintaining a comprehensive school health program.
• Collect health information for compliance with state immunization regulations and school policies.
• Conduct immunization programs, physical examinations, and sight and hearing testing.
• Perform nursing assessments for students who are ill or injured; provide first aid, nursing care, and referrals as needed.
• Evaluate nursing care and adjust plans of care as necessary.
• Implement district policy on exclusion and readmission of students in relation to infectious diseases.
• Maintain accurate records in accordance with state and federal law and board policies.
• Develop individual health care plans (ICHP) as needed, with goals and interventions for students and inclusion in IEPs.
• Intervene according to the nursing care plan to promote and restore health, prevent illness, and aid rehabilitation.
• Serve as a member of school teams (e.g., Crisis Teams, PPT, Section 504).
• Provide guidance, counseling and health education to students, parents and employees as necessary.
• Report health needs to parents, school district personnel, physicians and clinics as needed.
• Provide instruction and training on the Heimlich maneuver, Bloodborne Pathogen safety, and the district’s emergency plan; care for students including those with disabilities.
• Contribute to nursing and school health through innovations in theory and practice, including reports.
• Provide medical assessment to school district employees as requested.
• Notify appropriate persons or agencies of student injuries or illnesses per policy.
• Consult with parents, students and school district staff to interpret health and developmental assessments.

• BSN is required.
• Master's degree in related field preferred.
• Must meet qualifications of a school nurse as defined by state regulations.
• Successful 3 years of supervised clinical experience working with pediatric population, preferably in a school setting.
• Knowledgeable about pediatric nursing and child development (preferred).
• Experience in first aid, immunizations and communicable diseases.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work with young students and parents.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Criminal background check and Tuberculin testing as required.

• Must be eligible for State of Delaware Certification as a School Nurse.
• Registered professional nurse (RN) licensed in the state.
• Current CPR certification.

The position may require standing, sitting, typing, and other standard physical activities. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color vision, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The work typically occurs in a school building or in community-based instruction with various schools.
