Position Purpose

Provides interpreting services to deaf/hard of hearing students, their classmates, the educational staff and others involved in the educational setting.

Essential Functions
  • Accurately interprets spoken and signed messages without censorship for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, classmates, educational staff and others involved in the educational setting.
  • Participates in educational team meetings.
  • Provides interpreting for other activities during the regularly scheduled school day as needed (i.e., field trips, IEP meetings, etc.).
  • Prepares for interpreting by familiarization with the physical environment and with subject‑area vocabulary and concepts.
  • Remains current and knowledgeable on language expansions and trends.
  • Attends in‑service activities, engages in academic coursework, or reassesses interpreting skills through the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment or the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment Written Test.
Additional Duties
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Chief Instructional Services Officer, Superintendent, or other district office administrator as designated by the Superintendent.
Qualifications
  • Minimum: high school diploma.
  • Preferred:
    Baccalaureate degree, graduation from a recognized interpreter training program (ITP).
  • Preferred:
    National certification or Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) level 4.0+.
  • Successful completion of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment including the Written Assessment.
  • Fluency in English and in Sign Language.
  • Adherence to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment Codes of Professional Conduct.
  • Current membership in the state and/or national interpreting organizations desirable.
Experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of children.
  • Ability to work with others.
  • Willingness to follow directions.
  • Ability to handle unforeseen situations in accordance with Board Policy.
  • Ability to accept individual differences among children.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organizational and telephone skills.
Physical Demands
  • Use strength to lift items needed to perform the functions of the job.
  • Sit, stand and walk for required periods of time.
  • Speak and hear.
  • Use close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception and the ability to focus vision.
  • Communicate effectively in English, using proper grammar and vocabulary. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
  • Reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers to handle objects and operate tools, technology equipment, computers, and/or controls.

  • Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, and dress in a neat, clean and professional manner for the assignment and work setting.
