Description
Terra-Gen is seeking a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) Technician II to perform scheduled and unscheduled fieldwork required to operate and maintain the project to standards above industry best practice. Fieldwork includes, but is not limited to, commissioning new systems, troubleshooting, testing, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, training of on‑site personnel, and assisting site visits. The BESS Technician may also be assigned the responsibility for observing the quality and safety practices of contractors performing BESS technical maintenance and commissioning type work.
Roles and Responsibilities- Perform work independently and/or in a team environment, depending upon skills, experience and job task.
- Troubleshoot and repair DC, low‑voltage AC, data acquisition, meteorological stations and ESS system components, including grounded circuits, safely and efficiently while using all safety practices.
- Test BESS systems: open circuit voltage, operating DC current, power meter verification, megger test, and resistance test.
- Understand, participate in and promote general workplace safety and follow established environmental and safety standards.
- Demonstrate professional demeanor and strong communication skills.
- Perform preventive maintenance on BESS systems, including thermography of low and medium voltage equipment.
- Audit third‑party systems for safety concerns, quality of work performed, and improvement opportunities.
- Coordinate contracted workers performing troubleshooting and repairs to OEM equipment.
- Document time, material, expenses and maintenance records in the CMMS.
- Complete training and qualification requirements within specified time frame.
- Prepare reports and communicate results of maintenance activities to site management.
- Implement switching orders.
- Apply cybersecurity policies and incident response procedures.
- Recognize lift hazards and complete safe work permits and JHA’s.
- Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Take on additional qualified duties, including procedure development and revision.
- Practical knowledge of electrical systems, BESS systems and their components; knowledge of LOTO procedures.
- Knowledge of building and structural construction techniques.
- Ability to safely and efficiently troubleshoot system failures, including ground faults.
- Strong analytical, diagnostic and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent verbal, written, communication and presentation skills.
- Strong prioritization skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to train others.
- Journeyman or licensed industrial electrician preferred.
- Certified inverter training by Power Electronics preferred.
- High school graduate or GED.
- 3–5+ years’ experience at a Utility‑scale Solar Plant.
- Practical experience with electrical wiring and basic construction practices.
- Technical, science or engineering degree, certificate with energy systems preferred.
- Experience with metering and test equipment.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Customer‑service orientation and responsive communication.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical, I&C and mechanical drawings and technical manuals.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- OSHA 30 and CPR qualification preferred.
- NFPA 70E preferred.
- Provide information/analysis to leadership and department managers.
- Create written reports, memos and emails to communicate findings internally and externally.
- Communicate with project managers, engineers, vendors and contractors professionally.
- Analyze operating data, identify anomalies and recommend corrective actions.
- Calculate percentages, lengths, electrical values and perform basic algebra, geometry and statistical analysis.
- Analyze and troubleshoot problems with utility‑scale PV and BESS systems.
- Resolve practical problems in situations with limited standardization and interpret diverse instructions.
- Inspect and perform maintenance in outdoor construction areas without handicap access.
