Job Description
Under general supervision, performs a full range of lifeguard and instructor duties; observes and supervises the activities of patrons in the pool and surrounding area; protects life, prevents accidents, and enforces pool regulations; rescues swimmers in emergency situations and provides emergency medical treatment; assists in the maintenance of facilities and equipment and will also serve as swim instructors to participants.
This is a seasonal, part-time, hourly position under the direction of the Community Services Director. The seasonal period is eight weeks.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsUnder supervision of the Recreation Manager, the lifeguard oversees the conduct of patrons of the Beaumont Unified School Pool facility to provide a safe environment for all participants. The lifeguard enforces safe rules and regulations and maintains the pool facility clean for all patrons. The lifeguard will effectively communicate with other lifeguards and management, and be a team player to ensure an efficient summer program.
Free courses will be offered for students to become Lifeguard certified.

- Principles and practices of public relations.
- Appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment.
- Techniques and methods of swimming instructions for all age groups.
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Perform lifeguarding duties and water rescues.
- Enforce applicable rules and regulations of the City pool.
- Swim with endurance and proficiency at a level necessary to perform assigned duties.
- Lift a victim from the pool.
- Remain attentive at all times.
- Cooperatively work with fellow employees, children, and the public.
- Respond to emergency situations and administer first aid and CPR as necessary.
- Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
- Follow written and oral instructions.
- Read and write, prepare and submit written reports.
- Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures, and rules and regulations.
- Possess effective interpersonal skills, using tact, patience and courtesy.
- Perform routine multi-tasking functions.
- Use sound professional judgement in the application of policy, procedures and laws in situations arising in the course and scope of employment.
- Understand and work within the course and scope of duties and responsibilities.
- Relate effectively to people of a variety of cultures, languages, disabling conditions and socioeconomic situations.
- Analyze situations, apply departmental rules, and use common sense where no guidelines are readily available.
- Work with minimum supervision.

- Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education/Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade or currently attending high school.
Experience: One year of lifeguarding experience is desirable.
License or Certificate: Must be at least 16 years of age (minors need to submit work permit at time of appointment).
