Job Summary The Student Business Services Specialist supports the administration of student financial account services at Lamar University by ensuring accurate processing of billing, payments, refunds, and account reconciliations. This position serves as a key point of contact for students, faculty, staff, and external partners, providing clear guidance on financial processes and resolving account discrepancies in a timely and professional manner.
The role assists with critical enrollment-related processes, including registration support, non-payment drops, and student account holds, while also managing third-party billing, contract payments, and reconciliations. Additionally, the Specialist contributes to student engagement efforts by supporting orientation activities and assisting with student .
Working in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment, the position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain accurate financial records while ensuring compliance with institutional policies and confidentiality standards.
Essential Job Functions- Process and maintain student financial accounts, including billing, payments, refunds, adjustments, and reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and compliance with institutional policies.
- Review and resolve student account discrepancies, including managing AR holds, late fees, registration issues, and non-payment drop processes.
- Provide high-quality customer service by responding to inquiries from students, faculty, staff, and external partners through in-person, phone, and email communication.
- Support third-party billing and contract processes, including payment entry, invoice, and reconciliation with external vendors.
- Assist with enrollment-related activities and student services, including registration support, orientation, participation, and student .
- Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to the needs of the university.
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Finance, Accounting, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience in student accounts, finance, accounting, or customer service may be considered in lieu of the degree.
- Two (2) or more years’ experience in student accounts, finance, accounting, customer service, or related experience.
- Verifiable experience with cash handling or reconciliations.
- Master’s degree in business administration, finance, accounting, or a related field.
- Experience in higher education student business services or bursar operations.
- Familiar with Banner or similar enterprise systems.
- Experience with financial aid processes and student billing practices.
- Strong knowledge of student financial services operations, including accounts receivable, billing, refunds, and reconciliation, as well as applicable institutional policies and FERPA regulations.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to review, identify, and resole student account discrepancies accurately and efficiently.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate financial information to students, faculty, staff, and external partners.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain confidentiality, adapt to changing processes, and work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer.
- There will be occasional standing, walking, bending, stooping, and kneeling.
- Work is performed in a standard office environment within a higher education setting with frequent interaction with students, parents, faculty, staff, and external vendors.
- May require extended or varied hours during peak periods along with working multiple tasks in a service-oriented environment.
