PURPOSE:

Assist the teacher in meeting the instructional needs of students with disabilities. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

* High School Diploma or GED

* Paraprofessional Certification

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

* Effective communication and interpersonal skills

* Ability and desire to work with all children

Experience:

* Some experience with handicapped children is preferred

MAJOR

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

* Work with and under the immediate direction of the teacher(s) to whom assigned.

* Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce motor and/or cognitive skills as assigned by the teacher.

* Assist in supervising students throughout the school day--inside the classroom, lunchroom, hall, playground, and transportation.

* Work with an identified student, in any assignment.

* Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students.

* Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials.

* Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom.

* Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.

* Assist the teacher in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports.

* Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

* Cooperate with other staff members in the movement of students from one activity to another.

* Participate in staff development training programs and faculty meetings.

* Enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local Board Policy.

* Ride a special school bus to assist handicapped students in getting on and off the bus and in maintaining order.

* Assist students who have personal hygiene problems.

* Other duties as assigned to meet the needs of special education students.
