Special Education Aide
Assist the teacher in meeting the instructional needs of students with disabilities. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.
Qualifications:
- Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or GED Paraprofessional Certification - Special Knowledge/
Skills:
Effective communication and interpersonal skills Ability and desire to work with all children
Experience:
Some experience with handicapped children is preferred
Major
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Work with and under the immediate direction of the teacher(s) to whom assigned.
- Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce motor and/or cognitive skills as assigned by the teacher.
- Assist in supervising students throughout the school day--inside the classroom, lunchroom, hall, playground, and transportation.
- Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students.
- Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials.
- Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom.
- Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
- Assist the teacher in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports.
- Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
- Cooperate with other staff members in the movement of students from one activity to another.
- Participate in staff development training programs and faculty meetings.
- Enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local Board Policy.
- Ride a special school bus to assist handicapped students in getting on and off the bus and in maintaining order.
- Assist students who have personal hygiene problems.
- Other duties as assigned to meet the needs of special education students.
