Team Lead, Academic Advising
The Team Lead, Academic Advising, serves as the senior advising role within the Undergraduate Advising Center, supporting the Associate Director and Senior Director in delivering high-quality academic advising, student support, and enrollment initiatives. This position supervises a team of academic advisors and advisor seniors within an assigned Meta Major, provides guidance on advising practices, leads assigned initiatives, and ensures consistent execution of departmental processes.
The Team Lead also advises a student cohort, supports training and onboarding of new advisors, collaborates with campus partners, and uses advising technologies to monitor student progress and enhance student success. This role plays a key part in maintaining effective communication, improving advising operations, and supporting university retention efforts.
Essential Job Functions:
- Lead, supervise, and mentor a team of academic advisors and advisor seniors within the assigned Meta Major, providing guidance, oversight, and support to ensure consistent advising practices and effective execution of departmental processes.
- Advise and support students by providing accurate guidance on degree requirements, course selection, TSI placement, academic planning, student success strategies, use of degree audits, and referrals to appropriate campus resources, while maintaining complete and compliant records.
- Coordinate, implement, and track advising initiatives developed by the Associate Director or Senior Director, ensuring advisors within the Meta Major understand goals, complete assigned tasks, and meet established expectations, and report progress accordingly.
- Support training and onboarding of new advisors through shadowing, process guidance, cross-training, and serving as the primary point of contact for advising-related questions, technology use, and procedural consistency.
- Collaborate and communicate with academic departments, campus partners, students, parents, faculty, and administrators, representing the Undergraduate Advising Center professionally and utilizing advising technologies to advance student success and retention efforts.
- Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to the needs of the university.
Minimum and Desired
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Three years or more of direct experience in academic advising and academic advocacy.
- Knowledge and experience in leading a group of staff or student staff.
- Master's degree
- 1 year of experience in the supervision of a group or staff.
- Mentorship, supervision, or coordination experience specifically involving academic advisors and advising procedures.
- Knowledge of best practices and literature related to academic advising, student success, and student retention initiatives.
- Familiarity with advising tools such as Banner, Degree Works
Key
Competencies:
- Knowledge of academic advising practices, university policies, FERPA, and degree/program requirements.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
- Ability to lead, mentor, and support a team of advisors while managing multiple initiatives.
- Skill in using advising technologies and systems such as Banner, Degree Works, and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments and apply a solutions-based approach to student and staff needs.
Physical Requirements:
- The position primarily requires the ability to sit for extended periods while performing computer-based advising, documentation, and communication tasks.
- It involves frequent verbal communication with students, staff, faculty, and parents, both in person and through virtual platforms.
- The role also requires the ability to work occasional evenings or weekends and the capacity to travel periodically for professional meetings or conferences.
Job Conditions:
- Work is performed in a standard office environment and requires the ability to use a computer for extended periods, communicate effectively in person and electronically, and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic setting.
