The Title III Office, in conjunction with The Center for Academic Success is seeking a qualified graduate or undergraduate student to serve as a biology tutor. Successful candidates will support undergraduate students enrolled in first- and second-year biology courses through individual and small-group tutoring sessions.
This is an on-campus position.
(Listed in order of frequency. Total time allocation equals 100%)
- Meet individually or in small groups with students to assist them in understanding course content
- Encourage students to develop study skills that lead to long-term retention of course material
- Maintain consistent communication with supervisory staff
- Model appropriate academic attitudes and behaviors to staff, faculty and students
- Attend mandatory tutor training meetings
- Complete and submit tutoring appointment report after each applicable tutoring session on Navigate
- Perform other duties as assigned.
:
- Perform other assigned tasks, such as attending required in-person or online Title III Office meetings, providing students with support and tutoring, and attending events sponsored by the Title III Office.
- Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
- Demonstrated proficiency in specific tutoring subject areas (A or B grades in Biology courses)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong decision-making skills
- Two references, including at least one from a current Lamar University faculty member who can verify subject proficiency
- Computer proficiency
- Visual acuity to read written or printed text on screens or paper
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and/or through writing
- Manual dexterity for writing, typing, and reaching
- Ability to move safely to and from various buildings across campus
- Ability to lift and move objects no heavier than 10 pounds
- Maximum 19.5 hrs/week
- Work is indoors and sedentary
- Schedule is subject to change according to student worker availability and department need
This position is not eligible for benefits
This is a grant-funded part-time position.
