Position: Math Shop Student Assistant & Tutor - Undergraduate (Inst Energy & Petro Ind Eng Stu Svc)

The Math Shop, housed within the Department of Mathematics, seeks graduate and undergraduate students for Math Shop tutors. The successful candidates will actively engage undergraduate students taking first- and/or second-year mathematics courses in individual and/or small group tutoring sessions. Math Shop tutors guide students in the learning process to become successful, independent learners of Mathematics. This is a fully on-campus position.

Support students’ mathematics learning in individual and/or small group tutoring sessions by guiding students through understanding content and definitions, helping them develop necessary learning skills, and clearly explaining information in different ways.

Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to, attending required in-person/online training courses, offering course-specific tutoring sessions, greeting students and assisting them with the check-in and
-out process, answering phones, cleaning Math Shop workspace, etc.

Minimum

Education Required:

Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (undergraduate and/or graduate) and/or letter grade of B or higher in select math courses.
Currently enrolled at Lamar University.
Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Graduate student classification.
Strong mathematics background.

Required Qualifications:

Must be able competently to tutor for MATH 1314 and 1316.

Desired

Qualifications:

Successfully completed, i.e. earned a letter grade of B or higher in, one or more of the following courses or their equivalents: MATH 1324, 1332, 1342, 2318, 2320, 2413, 2414, 2415. Preference will be given to courses successfully completed at Lamar University but transfer credits will be considered.

Physical Requirements:

Able to lift 30-35 lbs and be able to perform a variety of physical tasks including lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, stair climbing, moving objects, and walking between buildings.

Job Conditions:

Indoor, classroom setting. Mainly sedentary work but can require standing/presenting for indeterminate lengths of time.
