Assistant Area Engineer – Beaumont (2601375)
TxDOT's Beaumont District is looking for an Assistant Area Engineer to join our Beaumont Area Office at the Beaumont District Headquarters. The position is part of the Texas Department of Transportation workforce of over 13,000 employees statewide. The role involves leading a team dedicated to maintaining the state’s roadways.

Assists in directing area office operations and manages or supervises employees involved in construction, design, maintenance, survey, laboratory activities, and office operations.
Reports to the Area Engineer and assumes responsibility for the area office in the engineer’s absence.
Establishes own work plan and priorities to meet objectives; handles issues independently on occurrence.
Assists the Area Engineer with projecting personnel and equipment needed for each project; responds to emergency situations as required.
Conducts pre‑construction, employee forum and/or safety meetings.
Determines quantities and estimates costs.
Inspects roads, monitors maintenance activities, and coordinates scheduling of maintenance with construction projects.
Monitors traffic control plans.
Oversees right‑of‑way design and/or plan preparation.
Plans and schedules work of construction personnel and provides on‑the‑job training.
Prepares and reviews monthly and final estimates and construction reports.
Resolves public complaints.
Works with governmental officials on behalf of the Area Engineer.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
QualificationsEducation: Bachelor's degree in engineering or related science. A higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience: 4 years of transportation engineering. Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Related graduate‑level education may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
Licenses and
Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Licensed Professional Engineer. Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in Texas, must (1) meet Texas Engineering Practices Act requirements, (2) obtain a Texas professional engineering license within six months of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
Sedentary work: lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools.
Light work: lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
Standing: prolonged periods of time.
Repetitive motion: substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
Drug Test- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety‑impact positions. This is a safety‑impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
- Please note that the Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, (e) – does not authorize medical marijuana under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
