Overview

TxDOT's Beaumont Area Office is looking for a Transportation Engineer I or II based in Beaumont, TX. Join the TxDOT Bryan District to gain valuable experience on major and minor transportation projects, including project planning, roadway and bridge design, culvert analysis and design, and other engineering principles and applications that will shape the greater Beaumont area.

Salary

Transportation Engineer I: $65,104 - $106,634

Transportation Engineer II: $69,572 - $114,099

Responsibilities
  • Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.
  • Assists Project Managers with resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and procurement.
  • Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation.
  • Assists with the development of design and project development reports, surveys and correspondence.
  • Coordinates on design schematics.
  • Coordinates with properties, utility companies, attorneys and governmental representatives to accurately depict the highway project’s impact on adjacent properties.
  • Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on‑site engineering reviews, analysis, tests, and to provide technical support.
Additional Duties for Transportation Engineer II
  • Negotiates fees, explains scope of work and monitors consultant design contracts.
  • Performs complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts.
  • Performs complex planning work such as plan review, calculations, and assistance in transportation planning studies.
Minimum Qualifications

Education
:
Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science accepted by TX PELS.

Experience
:
Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Related graduate‑level education may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer*
  • If performing underwater bridge inspections:
    Must have Open Water Diver certification.
  • For Bridge Inspection:
    Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector’s Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within one year of hiring.

* Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six months of the date of hire, and sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Light work:
    Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects 10 lbs or more.
  • Repetitive motion – substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Standing prolonged periods of time.
  • Talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • This job is physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment. This is a safety impact position and will be subject to random drug testing. The Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, (e) – does not authorize medical marijuana under state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
