Construction Inspector IV-V - Beaumont Area Office (2601697)

TxDOT's Beaumont District seeks qualified Construction Inspectors with construction and inspection experience to join our team. The Beaumont District supports training and development, including the Inspector Development Program, ACI Certification, Hot Mix Asphalt training and certification, and certifications in soil, flex base, and aggregate. This position reports to the Beaumont Area Office and works with licensed engineers, inspectors, designers, recordkeepers, and engineering assistants.

The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the right to determine the level of position offered based on skill, education, and business needs.

Responsibilities

Oversees inspection of construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution. OR Oversees statewide oversight activities for construction projects; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution and/or provides statewide technical assistance and training in support of implementation, oversight and review of Site Manager activities.

Trains others. May lead the work of professional and technical employees. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for final approval of all engineering-related work. May perform material tests/manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Work requires contact with other governmental agencies and private entities including contractors. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Construction Inspector IV responsibilities include:

  • Composes correspondence, reports and supporting documents; files; orders supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinates programs and projects to enhance efficiency and streamline operations.
  • Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.
  • Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Oversees construction record-keeping, and reviews change orders and payment recommendations; prepares reports.
  • Assists in engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and plan development support for others.
  • Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Reviews construction records and inspection reports to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Documents work progress and issues arising during the project.
  • Mentors and develops technicians in test and inspection procedures and material specifications.

Construction Inspector V responsibilities include the above and the following:

  • Planning, design, data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and plan development support.
  • Trains and provides training recommendations to staff on new operations.
  • Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and suggests improvements to management.
  • Conducts project reviews and coordinates inspections with other inspectors and district/division project managers.
  • Ensures adequate levels of equipment and materials; ensures material tests are performed and meet standards.
  • Ensures monthly estimates are submitted accurately and timely to facilitate contractor payments.
  • May assist in planning and coordinating office operations.
  • Monitors project phasing, traffic control plans, and airport closure plans; ensures safety standards; inspects barricades and moves traffic control devices as needed.
  • Coordinates inspection schedules and access issues with district personnel.
  • Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
Minimum Qualifications

Education
:
High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience
:

Construction Inspector IV: 3 years of experience in construction, inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience.
