What You'll Be Doing
The Structural Engineering Lead is responsible for supervising and providing technical direction to a team of engineers. The role involves full delivery of civil/structural deliverables and services on time, within budget, and meeting quality expectations. It requires extensive experience in civil/structural engineering and utilization of project controls for cost, scheduling, and quality. This work is performed with minimal supervision in the Beaumont office.
PrimaryResponsibilities
- Review and approval of all civil/structural deliverables.
- Validation of professional services and construction estimates at project onset and tracking changes as the project progresses.
- Perform engineering activities such as stress analysis, construction specifications, material procurement specifications, calculations, and estimates.
- Produce professional service estimates in accordance with departmental standards for project deliverables, studies, and proposals.
- Develop conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine the simplest, most efficient approach to engineering tasks.
- Establish design criteria, incorporating client requirements, estimates, scope basis, and applicable state, local, and federal standards and codes. Ensure permitting requirements are established and communicated.
- Maintain scope and deliverables awareness, initiating timely change notices when deviations affect schedule, deliverables, or cost.
- Plan and organize team work, communicating the plan to the team, project leadership, and the client.
- Track and maintain control of project performance, budget progress, schedule commitments, and quality standards.
- Delegate work to engineers proportionate to their technical skills and experience, following up to ensure efficient progress and quality.
- Consult with design leaders from other disciplines, following up to ensure efficient progress and quality.
- Produce detail design calculations and sketches for materials of construction, organized for efficient checking and drafting.
- Produce designs with efficient use of construction materials, emphasizing ease of construction and client satisfaction.
- Check calculations made by other engineers for accuracy, code conformance, and engineering practice standards.
- Produce construction specifications.
- Monitor drawings in progress to ensure conformance to design calculations and specifications.
- Assist drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing problems, ensuring sufficient sketches and details for engineering drawings.
- Produce bid packages for civil/structural purchase inquiries and subcontract pricing.
- Understand the skills and experience required to perform engineering and design functions.
- Participate in training program planning, continuous education opportunities, and professional development of staff.
- Education
:
Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university. Structural coursework is required for structural positions. - Registration
:
Professional Engineering registration is highly preferred. - Experience
:
Requires 10 or more years of relevant industrial experience in civil/structural engineering and management.
- Knowledge of design standards and codes.
- Knowledge, application, and specification of civil/structural materials.
- Development of material procurement specifications.
- Knowledge of good design practices for sizing all civil/structural systems.
- Knowledge of other disciplines’ deliverable development to ensure coordination.
- Knowledge of schedule constraints and information requirements for deliverable production.
- Ability to accurately estimate completion of assigned tasks.
- Ability to develop a construction cost estimate, detailed engineering schedule, and man‑hour budget for projects.
- Ability to determine construction material quantities.
- Develop design criteria and scope of work.
- Ability to create accurate civil/structural installation documents from vendor equipment drawings.
