Essential Job Functions

Makes inspections and handles enforcement of city environmental codes and ordinances; represents the City in Municipal and County Courts; interprets health, safety and environmental regulations; answers public inquiries through research of city maps and records; maintains current records and researches tax rolls for property ownership; compiles information from tax records and GIS maps; enters data into computer; inspects properties for compliance with codes and prepares reports of inspections and investigations;

makes recommendations detailing corrective actions required; discusses inspections findings and recommendations with property owners; uses photography and computer equipment.

This position requires 100% onsite work. Normal office environment; outside field inspections in all kinds of weather; exposed to cold, heat, and temperature swings; may be exposed to fumes/odors, insects, dust/mites, animals and toxic waste hazards; frequently deals with irate and hostile citizens; must be available to work from 8:00 a.m.

-5:00 p.m. Monday‑Friday; must be available to work overtime and weekends when necessary.

Knowledge
  • City environmental codes and ordinances; basic principles, techniques and terminology of Code Enforcement; city government hierarchy and organizational structure; computer and use of laptop in the field, associated systems such as tax roll, water utilities, license plate files and code enforcement.
Skills/Abilities
  • Deal tactfully and effectively with the public to enforce regulations with firmness and impartiality; deal with the public in potentially conflicting situations; carry out tasks with minimal supervision; read and interpret legal regulations and information from maps; understand, follow, and transmit complex oral and written information; present ideas effectively, orally and in writing; organize and maintain files and records of inspections;

    read and write; learn computer systems applicable to division responsibilities.
Physical Requirements

Constantly sees and hears; frequently sits, stands, walks, drives vehicle, writes by hand, kneels, climbs, operates PC, enters data, lifts, carries, drags, pulls or pushes objects weighing up to 40 lbs., operates a camera; infrequently bends.

Education/Experience
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent; one (1) year experience dealing with the public;
    Certification as a Code Enforcement Officer preferred; one (1) year experience in a related field preferred.
Additional Qualifications
  • Must possess a valid Class C driver's license with a good driving record. Other state valid Driver's License equivalent to Texas Class C with a good driving record will be considered. Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency, you must possess a valid Texas driver's license.
  • Certification as a Code Enforcement Officer must be obtained within one (1) year of employment.
  • Writing and grammar tests will be administered. Applicant selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation and drug/alcohol screen test.
