The Monitor Technician is responsible for the monitoring of cardiac monitors to notify Nursing Units of abnormal variations.

• Confirms the name of the nurse caring for the telemetry patient upon initial placement and updates it every shift directly on the Centralized Telemetry Monitoring Unit (CTMU) monitor.
• Observes cardiac monitors and listens for alarms to identify abnormal variations in heart rhythm, and reports important changes to nursing staff immediately; posts strips on patient records according to established guidelines.
• Prints out and interprets cardiac strips on patient admission, once a shift, and upon rhythm abnormalities; places the strips on the Waveform/ECG Mounting Form and delivers the forms to the respective units according to established guidelines.
• Upon receiving an order to discontinue telemetry, the nurse or UAP disconnects the telemetry transmitter; the Monitor Technician cleans the telemetry transmitter and cardiac leads with a recommended bactericidal solution and stores them in the unit’s telemetry transmitter cabinet.
• Monitors telemetry equipment for optimum effectiveness, reporting any problems to the Director; when a telemetry outage is identified, activates the Service Disruption / Emergency Operations Plan by dialing the hospital emergency number 5555, reporting the outage location, and notifying the Nursing supervisor.
• Performs clerical duties for the department, prepares requisitions for supplies and secures the Director’s authorization; assists in maintaining a clean and organized station and department following the cleaning schedule.
