Beaumont, Texas, located in the Gulf Coast region, serves as the site of an integrated petrochemical complex on 2,700 acres. The complex includes a refinery, chemical plant, polyethylene plant, and lubricant blending and packaging plant, providing local employment and supporting the community’s economy.
What role you will play in our teamA Plant Operator Intern/Co‑op is responsible for the safe, efficient operation of processing units and related facilities, including monitoring unit start‑ups and shut‑downs, controlling operating variables, and maintaining equipment. Interns/Co‑ops work a 12‑hour rotating shift and may work overtime.
What you will do- Review logs or computer data and schematics to ensure process flow is correct.
- Physically inspect and monitor equipment and work area using vision, hearing, smell, and touch to ensure correct operation.
- Review unit logs to determine activities of previous shift.
- Read schedule or daily orders to determine assigned activities.
- Check for leaks, freezing, overheating, or excessive vibration in equipment.
- Check dials and gauges to collect temperature, pressure, level, and flow data and record readings on unit logs.
- Check control valve positions to ensure proper valve operation.
- Visually inspect flame pattern, header pressure, and fuel gas consumption in furnaces to identify hot spots or other problems.
- Perform basic equipment maintenance (add lube oil, water, tighten valve packing, change filters and steam traps, clear equipment) under guidance of a qualified operator.
- Communicate with console supervisor regarding process conditions and changes.
- Adjust local process parameters (temperature, pressure, etc.) to maintain product specifications under guidance.
- Operate and/or rotate pumps and compressors under guidance.
- Monitor equipment to ensure proper operation.
- Check gauges to verify furnace operating conditions.
- Monitor field equipment using electronic test equipment.
- Adjust equipment to meet operating specifications under guidance.
- Monitor process control console and respond to alarms under guidance.
- Inspect cooling towers for structural damage.
- Inspect safety valves, fire extinguishers, fire hoses, breathing apparatus, and other safety equipment.
- Perform winterization and summarization of equipment for maximum efficiency under guidance.
- Inspect, flush, paint, and grease fire monitors under guidance.
- Drain water from vessels and tanks under guidance.
- 2 year Process Operator degree or equivalent experience.
- Must be a current student at Lamar Institute of Technology, Lamar State College – Orange or Lamar State College – Port Arthur.
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
- Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite tools.
