Summary/Objective

The Trauma Registrar is responsible for the management of the Trauma Registry, data collection, data entry, data quality and integrity which is vital in supporting the Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety program. Provides advanced critical thinking skills utilizing nursing judgement to extrapolate all pertinent trauma diagnoses, procedures and complications after thorough review of the medical record. Performs Utilization Review on trauma and trauma surgery admissions.

Is an active participant in quality meetings conducted by Trauma Services.

Assessment and Care Process
  • A. Assessment: the registered nurse collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient’s health or the situation and enters this data into the Trauma Registry.
  • B. Diagnosis: the registered nurse analyzes the assessment data to determine the diagnoses or issues.
  • C. Outcomes Identification: the registered nurse identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or the situation.
  • D. Planning: the registered nurse develops a plan that preserves strategies and alternatives to attain expected outcomes.
  • E. Implementation: the registered nurse implements the identified plan, coordinates care delivery, employs strategies to promote health and a safe environment.
  • F. Evaluation: the registered nurse evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes.
  • G. Quality of Practice: the registered nurse systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.

  • Utilizes a systematic approach to provide individualized, goal-directed, nursing care by performing comprehensive nursing assessments regarding the health status of the patient, making nursing diagnoses that serve as the basis for the strategy of care, developing a plan of care based on the assessment and nursing diagnosis, implementing nursing care, and evaluating the patient’s responses to nursing interventions.
  • Make assignments others that take into consideration patient safety and that are commensurate with the educational preparation, experience, knowledge, and physical and emotional ability of the person to whom the assignments are made (in compliance with the Texas Nurse Practice Act). Maintains required documentation of patient care and unit activities in accordance with standards.
  • Clarify any order or treatment regimen that the nurse has reason to believe is inaccurate, non-efficacious or contraindicated by consulting with the appropriate licensed practitioner and notifying the ordering practitioner when the nurse makes the decision not to administer the medication or treatment. Know the rationale for and the effects of medications and treatments and shall correctly administer the same to promote a safe environment for patients and others.
  • Ensures compliance with DSHS standards as a Level III Trauma Center. Performs concurrent and/or retro chart audits on patients admitted in the ED with traumatic diagnosis.
  • Enters or supervises entry of necessary data into the Trauma Registry and reviews statistics. Responsible for review of all necessary information and required forms on all trauma diagnosis and transfers.
  • Promotes the benefits of an organized trauma service system to professional and community groups. Participates in community educational programs, interacts with local EMS community.
Required

Education and Experience

Graduate of an accredited nursing program

2-3 years related experience in surgical, critical care or emergency nursing.

Required License/Certifications

Current RN License in the state of Texas

BLS certification

ACLS certification

PALS or ENPC certification

TNCC certification

Preferred or within 60 days of hire:
Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM) course, American Trauma Society (ATS) Trauma Registrar Course.

Obtain the American Trauma Society Certified Specialist Trauma Registry (CSTR) within 18 months of hire.
