Overview
A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Barista, you are an integral member of the team at the heart of our Cafés. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way, by saying hello, answering questions and connecting readers with the right beverages and café items. You help maintain attractive presentation and ensure the efficient running of the Café, including unpacking and stocking deliveries and tidying the bakes case and dining area.
You work our registers in a quick and friendly manner, delivering highly professional service to customers.

- Maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
- Fill scheduling gaps when able; be flexible and responsive to the store’s needs (open from early mornings to late evenings every day, including weekends and most holidays).
- Be positive and willing in your approach to work, perform tasks with purpose and energy, and work reliably.
- Be supportive and considerate of colleagues, helping others in the team and showing kindness.
- Always be cheerful with customers and help them as needed.
- Show aptitude and willingness to learn new skills and acquire new knowledge in the store.

As a Barista, you are part of a busy team and will be trained to master the operational competencies of a Barnes & Noble barista. You will be trained and expected to be proficient in:
- Using varied technology including registers, computers, tablets, programs and other tools.
- Developing strong merchandising skills to maintain café presentation and cleanliness.
- Maintaining counter and floor retail fixtures with effective visual merchandising.
- Running a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
- Supporting the receiving and unpacking of deliveries and subsequent stocking.
- Making food and drinks accurately using available knowledge and resources (e.g., drink recipe guides, product spec sheets).
- Maintaining café cleanliness through daily and weekly cleaning tasks.
- Following FIFO practices and dating products correctly.
- Supporting the bookfloor team when needed.
- Understanding loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques; identifying theft and seeking support for issues in the store.
All work requires physical activity including prolonged standing, bending, lifting and walking. You may work in other stores if needed to support the wider cluster.
Development and Career PathAs you gain experience, your barista knowledge and skills should develop. You will increasingly contribute as you develop your expertise. You will:
- Build café knowledge of products across beverages, bakery, savory options and gifting.
- Use this knowledge to maintain an interesting and appetizing café presentation.
- Speak about and support key sales objectives such as new LTO items or café promotions with customers and colleagues.
- Make effective food and beverage customization recommendations to customers.
- Build knowledge and engagement for café retail options.
- Understand and use café training tools appropriately.
- Use knowledge about café safety, hygiene and sanitation guidelines to maintain all standards.
- Support the success of key products and promotions.
As you develop, you may advance to the Senior Barista role with additional challenges and growth opportunities. You will comply with all company policies and procedures.
