Essential Job Functions
- Participate in independent study and formal classroom instruction to become licensed as a Texas Peace Officer.
- Prevent, detect, and investigate crimes, including maintaining law and order.
- Patrol assigned areas of the city in a police vehicle and enforce traffic regulations.
- Issue citations, investigate collisions, property and person crimes, and complaints.
- Interview victims and witnesses, take affidavits, and apprehend persons suspected of crimes.
- Respond to calls for service such as disturbances, burglar alarms, gang activity, and traffic/parking violations.
- Serve warrants and write various reports, including offense, collision, and arrest reports.
- Check buildings and stores for security and testifying in court.
- Handle calls from the 911 Center, keep dispatchers informed of location and status, and administer first aid.
- Operate a Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) and provide credible testimony when required.

Work EnvironmentThis position requires 100% on‑site work and may involve exposure to all types of weather, dirt, dust, noise, fumes, odors, heat, cold, rain, humidity, and sudden temperature changes. The employee may be exposed to mechanical hazards, traffic hazards, bodily injuries, and, infrequently, chemical, electronic, fire hazards, explosives, or contagious diseases. The role may require various shifts with rotating days off.

The candidate must be able to see, hear, sit, speak, drive, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, twist, push, pull, carry, drag, lift heavy objects, and write by hand. Vision must be correctable to 20/20. Normal hearing and functional dexterity in both hands are required.
Education & ExperienceApplicants must have a GED or high‑school diploma. Cadet applicants will be hired as civilian employees and enrolled in an 18‑week Police Academy training program at a rate of $5,000 per month. Cadets will be required to sign a Police Cadet Training Agreement.
Testing & Qualifications Job‑Related Abilities Test (JRAT)Applicants must pass both written and physical components of the JRAT.
Written ExamThe exam is multiple‑choice covering reading comprehension, grammar, syntax, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary, arithmetic, and decision making. A writing exercise is included. The time limit is 3 hours, and at least a 70% score on the multiple‑choice portion is required to advance.
Physical Ability TestPolice Cadets must meet specified strength, stamina, speed, and power requirements. The test evaluates overall fitness and the ability to train while attending the academy.
- Event 1 – Obstacle Course – approximately 900 ft; run, climb, duck, and jump within 2 minutes.
- Event 2 – Handcuffing – lock and double‑lock handcuffs; unlock within 1 minute.
- Event 3 – Victim Rescue – lift and drag a 180‑lb. dummy 50 ft. within 1 minute.
- Event 4 – Weapons Test – twelve trigger pulls with each hand in 30 seconds.
- Event 5 – Vehicle Push – push a patrol vehicle 10 ft. on a level surface with gear in neutral within 1 minute.
- Event 6 – Tire Change – remove and reinstall a spare tire in 1 minute.
All events are pass‑or‑fail. An applicant must pass each event to continue in the hiring process. Second attempts are allowed before moving to the next event.
The administrators of the test retain discretion over the final assessment.

Salary & BenefitsSalary – Police Cadets earn $5,000 per month while enrolled in the academy (≈ 18 weeks). Cadets are classified as civilian employees and must enter a Police Cadet Training Agreement.
Employees receive health and dental insurance for themselves and eligible dependents, and the City sponsors a TMRS Retirement Plan with cost‑of‑living increases. Current rates for health and dental coverage are available from the Human Resources Department.
