Summary

The Ironworker Helper prepares the site for daily work and supports journeyman and apprentice ironworkers with tasks required for safe and efficient completion of projects. Responsibilities include housekeeping, material handling, and assisting with steel placement and installation. A minimum of 6 months of field experience in construction or a related craft is preferred. Must have the ability to read and interpret basic instructions and documentation.

The level of responsibility may vary depending on months of experience and assigned job step.

Responsibilities
  • Prepares work areas by cleaning, organizing, and staging materials for daily activities.
  • Loads, transport, and unloads steel, tools, and equipment to designated locations.
  • Assists with lifting, positioning, and securing steel beams, columns, reinforcing bars, and other materials during installation.
  • Holds and stabilizes materials while journeyman ironworkers connect, weld, or bolt components.
  • Follows hand signals or verbal instructions from ironworkers or signalers to properly guide placement of materials.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and rigging equipment under supervision.
  • Observes and follows all site safety requirements, ensuring work areas remain clean and free of hazards.
  • May assist with rigging activities, securing loads, and attaching lifting devices to steel members.
  • Supports alignment and leveling of steel structures as directed.
  • Performs minor maintenance or cleaning on tools and equipment.
  • Rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform daily functions.
  • Works under close to moderate supervision, typically reporting to a foreman or supervisor.
  • Gains knowledge of commonly used practices, concepts, and procedures within the trade.
Education And Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 months documented construction or field experience (ironwork experience preferred).
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must be physically able to lift up to 50 lbs, climb, and work at heights.
  • Willingness to learn and progress within the ironworker trade.
