Overview
Traffic Systems Technician I or II is located at the TxDOT Beaumont District Headquarters. The role involves maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing traffic systems and technologies. The position may require extensive statewide travel and work in heavy traffic conditions. The organization supports CDL training with zero upfront cost.
Responsibilities- Traffic Systems Tech I:
Assist in installing, maintaining, modifying, adjusting, testing, troubleshooting, inspecting, and/or repairing electronic traffic control, communication, data collection, and illumination systems. - Assist in installing and maintaining hardware and software for traffic systems and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
- Assist in collecting data (e.g., vehicle classification and Weight-In-Motion) and addressing traffic signal timing and congestion issues by proposing long-term solutions.
- Traffic Systems Tech II (essential duties in addition to Tech I): identify site characteristics, inspect construction methods, and ensure contractors meet plans and specifications.
- Install, maintain, and replace cameras, LED signs, fiber optics, and related equipment; monitor and troubleshoot communications devices and systems.
- Install, troubleshoot, and maintain hardware and software related to traffic systems, ITS, or Statewide Traffic Analysis and Reporting System (STAR).
High school diploma or equivalent.
ExperienceTraffic Systems Tech I:
No experience required.
Traffic Systems Tech II:
One year of experience in construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, or traffic systems maintenance (experience can be full-time or prorated part-time).
Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Mandatory:
Safety Impact Certificate – must obtain a Commercial Class A Driver's License or have obtained a CDL A within 180 calendar days from date of employment.

- Traffic Systems Tech I: construction equipment operations; electrical construction procedures; database management concepts and related technologies; tool handling and safety.
- Traffic Systems Tech II: construction equipment operations; electrical construction procedures; database management concepts; reading and interpreting plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps; tool handling and safety.
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
- Subject to noise; required to wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, etc.)
- Moderate physical effort: lift up to 50 lbs; frequently carry or lift up to 25 lbs
- Balancing, walking, standing, crouching; reaching; pushing; bending; and other mobility requirements
This job has been identified as physically demanding and requires a pre-employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety-critical positions and will be subject to random drug testing as applicable. The department adheres to DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations and does not authorize medical marijuana as a valid medical explanation for positive test results.
